More than 300 children took part in the workshop organised by the council in partnership with Mile End Children’s Centre. The event was part of a fortnight of free Easter events during the school break. A strategic plan has been developed to support social and economic needs in the borough. The initiatives include: delivering a programme of new-build council housing; ensuring integrated support for the rollout of Universal Credit; implementing the borough’s digital inclusion strategy; developing opportunities for growth and sustainability in commercial areas; supporting children with special educational needs; improving the identification of, and response to, victims of child sexual exploitation; delivering the Whitechapel Vision and increasing the pace of regeneration in Poplar. The council will continue to concentrate on providing excellent education services, and will also foster enterprise and employment opportunities. The strategic plan includes a strong focus on community safety, with a commitment to tackling and preventing hate crime, reducing anti-social behaviour and better management of the night-time economy. There is action to create a greener environment, including improving parks and supporting local sustainable transport. Steve Halsey, the council’s head of paid service and director of communities, localities and culture, said: “Despite ongoing pressures to the public purse, we have developed a strategic plan that puts our residents first. It will build on the council’s achievements and help shape a Tower Hamlets in which everyone, regardless of their background and circumstances, has the aspiration and opportunity to achieve their full potential. “The plan also articulates our commitment to the ongoing improvement of our services and meeting our Best Value duty.” Visit www.towerhamlets. gov.uk/communityplan 20 – 26 APRIL 2015 N E W S F R O M TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 5
