Station disaster On March 3, 1943, 173 people died in a crush at Bethnal Green station, which was being used as an air raid shelter. www.stairwaytoheavenmemorial.org News RUNNING a marathon is not a novelty for Bethnal Green resident Raju Vaidyanathan. This Sunday’s London Marathon will be Raju’s 18th. The runner, who works at Watney Market Idea Store, will be fundraising for the Bethnal Green Tube disaster memorial charity, Stairway to Heaven. Raju (right) said he is preparing for the run by exercising daily and eating lots of spaghetti. He hopes to finish the race in under five hours and has set a fundraising target of £3,000.
