First Steps in Photography will take a closer look at the streets, people, parks and landmarks of the borough. Starting on April 30, it is being run by East End Life writer Graham Barker every Thursday from 10am-1pm until July 2. The course is free, and childcare facilities, Bengali interpreters and cameras can be provided. Participants work together to create a group photobook and their own set of business cards. Somsul Haq of Quaker Street, Whitechapel, was selling illegally imported cigarettes in Whitechapel Market when he was stopped by Tower Hamlets Enforcement Officers in August last year. Officers seized 32 packets of cigarettes and five packets of hand-rolling tobacco,which were passed to the council’s consumer and business regulations service. Haq appeared at Thames Magistrates’ Court on April 9 and was found guilty of two offences –distributing products with non-English health warnings and for illegal street trading. The court heard how he had previously been cautioned for a similar offence and ruled he pay £600 for the lack of English health warnings, £200 for illegal street trading, costs of £1,138 and a £60 victim surcharge. News in brief Hospital to host kidney event PATIENTS are invited to an event aimed at raising awareness about kidney disease and organ donation and improving the experience of patients living with the condition. Hosted by Barts Health NHS Trust, the event will take place at the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, on Friday, May 8, from 2-6pm, with a social gathering from 6-8pm. “The idea is to try to work with our patient groups to improve service delivery, but also to engage with our patients more in developing a service that suits their needs,” said Breeda McManus, a renal consultant nurse with the trust. The Backyard Comedy Club in Bethnal Green has offered to donate 50 per cent from each ticket sold to Ability Bow, which runs exercise sessions for people with diabetes, multiple sclerosis, those recovering from a stroke, mental health patients and those with heart conditions. Tickets for the show, starting at 8pm, are £10 with a £1 booking fee. Money raised will help gym users return to exercise, which improves their fitness, mobility, confidence and independence. Sadia Chuhan, 20, was placed in her apprenticeship role at Thomson Reuters by Tower Hamlets College. The IT apprentice won the ‘rising star in IT 2015’ award, at the everywoman in Technology Awards, held in central London. “I’m really delighted to have won this award and thank my mum for pushing me to do an apprenticeship,” Sadia told East End Life.
