Sport see below Grab a stick to be back in the game Hockey WAPPING Hockey Club are supporting a campaign to get more women to take up the sport. The Back to Hockey programme has started at John Orwell Centre and Wapping are supporting the initiative by offering free weekly training sessions on Thursday evenings. Back to Hockey is partnering with Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign, a national programme celebrating women who love sport and being active no matter how well they do. For their part Wapping, supported by the Mayor of London’s Free Sport programme, are welcoming people who want to get back into fitness but may not have played for a number of years, along with those who want to play for the first time. Wapping chairman Stuart Burnside said: “Too many people are switched off from team sport believing that clubs are only interested if you’re a current player. “Wapping will always welcome you, whatever your standard, however long it is since you last played.” Wapping Hockey Club member and 2014 Back to Hockey player Nina Belk said: “The sessions were pitched perfectly – going back to basics in the first few weeks, it was very reassuring to discover that I hadn’t completely lost it. “As the weeks progressed, the coaches were great at pacing when to make things a bit more challenging.” If you want to play just turn up at 8.30pm on Thursday. Cup caps year of the Llamas Rugby Millwall Llamas 2nds 17 Chelmsford 10 MILLWALL Rugby Club’s 2nd team rounded off a tremendous season by winning this cup tournament at Westcliff. It completed a great campaign as both the Llamas and the 1st team also gained promotion. Chelmsford scored an early penalty and followed up with a converted try after 20 minutes. Against a strong wind and with the sun in their eyes, Milwall were pinned in their own half for much of the time. A clever charge-down and follow-up put James Fitzpatrick in for a try and Llamas went in at 5-10 down. The game became a real contest when Ben Barlow powered over the line to make it 10-10. As the final whistle approached Millwall continued to pressure Chelmsford’s line and finally a clever backs move took James Anderson through with seconds to spare. Lions cling on to fifth spot Star targeting number seven David Weir (pictured) equalled Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson’s record of six London Marathon wheelchair race victories in 2012, and has been targeting a seventh ever since. Marathon double in memory of my dad BY PETER FAULKNER WAPPING Hockey Club men’s captain Dan Carter will swap his hockey stick for running shoes when he runs in two marathons in memory of his father. Dan, 36, from Limehouse, will be running alongside athletics legends like Paula Radcliffe in the Virgin London Marathon. Then, on May 24, he competes in a second marathon in Copenhagen to raise money for Men United, the Prostate Cancer charity campaign. Both races are to commemmorate the 20th anniversary of his dad Tony’s death after a fouryear battle against the disease. The London Marathon will see Dan join stars like three-time winner Radcliffe, running the marathon for the final time, and six-time wheelchair race winner David Weir. Dan, who ran his first marathon in Germany last September, said: “I decided to run the London and Copenhagen marathons for Prostate Cancer UK because I want to help create a world where no father, son, brother, uncle or friend falls victim to this disease.” “I am looking forward to them both, and I’m delighted to Dan Carter is raising money for Prostate Cancer UK be raising awareness and muchneeded money to help the fight against prostate cancer.” Mark Bishop, director of fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “We’re delighted that Dan has decided to run as part of our Men United team this year. It is thanks to our fantastic marathon runners that we can fight for men by providing dedicated support and information to men affected by prostate cancer, and fund research to help more men survive the disease and enjoy a better quality of life.” Paula Radcliffe Paula Radclife, who won the marathon on three occasions between 2002 and 2005, said: “I made a pact with my dad back then that I would run it one day with him. I didn’t manage that, but I have such special memories from 2002, 2003 and 2005. “Then it was so frustrating all those years when I couldn’t do it because I was injured. So I really appreciate the chance to come and do it one more time.” The 35th anniversary of the London Marathon will also see David Weir and Marcel Hug in a thrilling re-match. Reigning world champion Hug edged out Weir by the length of his wheel last year, denying the six-time Paralympic gold medallist a record seventh London Marathon title.
