BY PETER FAULKNER Upminster 1 FC Hamlets POAPC 3 FC HAMLETS returned to winning ways at the top of Essex Olympian League Senior Division Three. But even though they are still in pole position, second-placed Catholic United are breathing down their necks – a point behind with a game in hand. Hamlets looked lethargic at the start against Upminster and, after giving away several cheap free kicks, the deadlock was finally broken after 30 minutes when they failed to clear a set piece and Upminster went ahead. After a tough half-time team talk from player-manager Ashley King things changed, but not without a further scare. Upminster nearly doubled their lead, but were thwarted by keeper Pyne. From this point on, Hamlets dominated and in the 55th minute King levelled via the post and the goalkeeper’s leg. Five minutes later a ball found its way to Hoy whose low cross from the byline was met by King to put Hamlets ahead. On the 80th minute a superb 40-yard ball over the top from Morris caught Upminster on the break. Gilroy raced on to it to lob the keeper with a firsttime strike, lifting the whole side after a recent run of poor form. Hamlets crashed out of the Essex Olympian League Senior Division Cup, losing 2-0 at home to Kelvedon Hatch. Sporting find form as relegation looms Sporting Bengal 0 Bowers & Pitsea 0 IN December, bottom-of-the-table Sporting Bengal were crushed 6-1 by the Essex side and, although they are still rock bottom, Sporting’s form has been transformed. Bowers & Pitsea were third in the table before this clash, and still in with a chance of the Essex Senior League title. Not any more. The east Londoners have taken eight points from a possible 15 in recent weeks and, although they look unlikely to avoid relegation, their form augurs well for next season.
