Goalkeepers came from as far afield as Bristol and Newark to participate in the club’s academy, where they were coached by among others Allan Dick (Scotland international), Stuart Burnside (Wapping chair), Maddie Hinch (England number 1), John Hurst (England goalkeeper coach), and Kirsty Mackay (England number 2) all pictured catching up on our exclusive story. Photo: Iain McAuslan Aid00-Nash inspires Wapping comeback BY PETER FAULKNER Wapping men 4 St Albans 2 WAPPING Hockey Club were up against a well-drilled side coached by Great Britain and England manager Andy Halliday, but in the end reputations counted for nothing. St Albans started at a ferocious tempo and an early attack saw them win a short corner from which they scored. The setback only served to spur Wapping into action and within minutes they equalised when man of the match Grant Aidoo-Nash swept home from close range. Wapping won an early short corner in the second half and took the lead when Mark Bennett, returning after injury, scored via a defender’s stick. St Albans soon equalised from a short corner, but goals from Phil Messent and captain Oliver Cooper clinched a 4-2 victory. Saffron Walden 5 Wapping ladies 2 WAPPING started promisingly and held the majority of the possession. They gained a free hit just outside the 25-yard box, which was taken quickly by Lucy Todd. After a swift pass to Kate Radford in the D they were 1-0 ahead. Saffron Walden countered by quickly equalising from a short corner and from that point on the home side were much stronger for the remainder of the first half, making several attacking moves that resulted in two more goals. Walden continued where they left off after the interval, piling on the pressure. But Wapping stood firm, then started to come back into the game and Charlotte Keizer scored their second goal with an impressive strike from the top of the D. The narrowing scoreline raised Wapping’s hopes but they were dashed again when Walden scored again on the break. Other results: There were wins for Wapping men’s second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh teams, defeat for the fourth team and a draw for the eighth and ninth teams. The ladies second, third and fifth teams all won, the fourth team were beaten. Emery keeps his head to hit hat-trick Hockey East London men’s 1st, 4 Witham 1st, 2 EAST London were slow out of the blocks at Lee Valley, but took the lead from a penalty corner slotted home by Henry Emery. Witham levelled and Emery needed first aid after taking a ball to the head. In his absence, Adam Lord scored a beauty. Emery reappeared after the break, and struck twice more. Thurrock ladies 1st, 1 East London 1st, 3 EAST London travelled to Essex and were caught napping by Thurrock who scored inside two minutes. East quickly regained their composure, and Eilis Quinlan levelled. Bee Armstrong’s shot was on target, only for Emily Menzies to make a cheeky steal and apply the finishing touch herself. Thurrock piled on the pressure and won several penalty corners, but could not convert any of them. Quinlan finished it off with a second goal. Eight in hunt for soccer stardom EIGHT young footballers are in with a chance of becoming soccer superstars after coming through the first stage of a talent competition. The eight were chosen from 120 aspiring Wayne Rooneys in the Search For An Asian Soccer Star trials in the shadow of Canary Wharf on October 18. The trials – part of a nationwide competition sponsored by City financial traders TradeNext – took place at London Docklands Powerleague in Selsdon Way, Isle of Dogs. Youngsters aged ten to 18 went through skills sessions and practice matches watched by coaches. TradeNext’s chief executive, Mohsin Jameel, raised in Newham, watched the youngsters go through their paces. “I thought the turnout was really incredible,” said Mohsin. “I would say the day has been a complete success.” The winner will spend a week at the TradeNext FootballCV Academy and go to a training session at St George’s Park, the FA’s centre of football excellence in Staffordshire. Eight more players will be selected from the fourth and last trial in Manchester for the final of 32 players in November.
