Vallance get a familiar feeling VALLANCE FC have discovered that familiarity breeds success – and their under-10 and under- 12 sides are testimony to that. The under-10s, who have trained together since they were six, entered the East London Junior league last season and not only became champions but only lost one game. On June 8 they also reached the semi-final of the ELE under- 10 Cup at the London Soccer Dome, losing on penalties to the eventual winners and league runners-up Interwood. They also won the Mayor’s Cup in May. On the same day, Vallance under-12s won the ELE Cup, proving that the Club Row, Bethnal Green-based club have a great future with the young talent it has at its disposal. Recently both sides took part in the first East London Asian Football Festival, a six-a-side tournament at the West Ham United training facilities in Beckton. Both teams won their groups and finished top – and both won their semi-finals to make it to the finals in the afternoon at Upton Park. In the final, Vallance under- 12 played Leytonstone FC and won 4-3 while Vallance under- 10 played London Tigers and beat them 9-1. Vallance FC have teams from under-8 to senior level – anyone interested in joining can email vallancefc@aol.com or call 07956 835811. Orbit planning a golden moment THE ArcelorMittal Orbit in Stratford’s Queen Elizabeth Park has pledged its support to England’s footballers in Brazil by promising to turn gold if they win the World Cup. STUDENTS at the University of East London have completed a brilliant double by winning the men’s and women’s competitions at the England Beach Student Cup. Twenty-nine men’s teams and 26 women’s took part in what is the country’s biggest beach volleyball competition, in Croyde, Devon. UEL’s women’s team – Alex Vajdova and Nikki Hoevenaars – won all their games in straight sets, beating Warwick, Loughborough and Newcastle universities en route to the final, where they proved to be a class above opponents Sussex. The men – Taylor Wilson and Mark Garcia-Kidd – defeated Liverpool, Cambridge and UCL, in the rounds and then came through against Bournemouth in the final. Tomasz Morawski, volleyball head coach and co-ordinator, said: “It’s a fantastic achievement. “We are a relatively new university on the volleyball scene and have made a big impact this year, coming third for both the men’s and women’s Indoor Student Cup and now we’ve been crowned champions for the student beach volleyball. “I would like to congratulate our players for their dedication and determination as they worked so hard after intense indoor seasons to prepare for the beach, juggling their academic commitments, work and training.” Oliphant twins’ joy as Repton claim seven titles Boxing REPTON took their season’s title tally to 25 after seven youngsters won novice titles in the Bristol Box Cup on the weekend of June 14 & 15. Some of the boxers had to fight twice before being crowned, one of whom was Jack Oliphant, who defeated Martin Archer (Staffs) unanimously on points in the semi-final, then stopped Tony Barber (Tamar) in two one-sided rounds in the final. He was the only Repton boxer to win inside the distance. Jack’s twin brother Billy Oliphant also picked up his first title with a unanimous points win over Q Maloney (Chadwell St Mary), using his jab to keep his taller opponent out of range. Jimmy Dean Lee won his semifinal on points against Keith Oakley (Woodside) and then getting a split decision over Gary Civeej (Sparta). Benny Eastwood defeated Mark Davis (Neath) in the semi-final and then had another unanimous points win over Neil Harris (Walcott) while Joe Doran also won comfortably on points against Jason Lee (Trumpeton). Further successes came from Robert Lacourt who won his first title on points over John Vaughan (Kings Heath) while Barney Doherty outclassed Lee Faulkner (Northside). There were semi-final defeats for Charlie Hickford at the hands of Tony Kelly (Frome), Levin Dieton against John Linteen (Shepton Mallett) and Tom Rolfe against Chris Paul (Bushey).
