The Gatehouse School team which won the gala see below Schools gala is a record breaker 290 swimmers from compete at St George’s Leisure Centre BY PETER FAULKNER THE 2014 Tower Hamlets primary schools gala proved a fantastic success with a record 290 swimmers and 21 schools taking part at St George’s Leisure Centre on June 13. And this year there was a special tribute to a man who had given so much to the sport. Two trophies were given out in honour of Eddie Earle who died in April. A swimmer gives it everything in the butterfly Eddie had taught swimming to school children at York Hall for more than 29 years. The trophies were won by Gatehouse boys and Sir William Burrough Primary School girls for the freestyle relays. The swimming gala saw 16 events and 16 finals in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and relay events for year 5 and 6 pupils. The schools which took part were: Riverhouse, Holy Family, Guardian Angels, Gatehouse, St Mary and St Michael, Olga, St Elizabeth, St Paul’s with St Luke’s, St Paul’s, St John’s, Globe, Cubitt Town, Sir William Burrough, Chisenhale, St Peter’s, English Martyrs, Bangabandhu, Bonner, St Saviour’s, Columbia and Sir John Cass. Norman Edgell, ex-president of London swimming, officiated and presented medals and trophies to the winners. Tower Hamlets Youth Sports Foundation provided several members for time-keeping duties, and Bethnal Green Sharks Swimming Club helped officiate at the event. The triumphant teams were: Overall winners: 1, Gatehouse 53 points; 2, St Elizabeth 46 points; 3, Riverhouse 37 points; Girls – St Elizabeth with 34 points; Boys – Gatehouse, 37 Victory is sweet points.
