Triple jumper Idowu, who won a gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, announced last year he was taking a break from athletics for the “foreseeable future”. But this week the selectors included him in the British squad for the Games and the European Team Championships taking place in Germany as East End Life went to press. Idowu, a former triple jump world champion who also won Olympic and world silver medals in 2008 and 2011, did not jump competitively last year and many assumed the 35-year-old would retire. But he has rediscovered his love of the sport, if not quite his best form. The furthest he has jumped in 2014 is 16.99m, way below his best of 17.81m – but this still makes him the second best jumper in Europe. BY PETER FAULKNER RIAZ Amin was just five when he decided he wanted to take up martial arts. Now seven years of dedication have put him on the verge of world glory. Amin (pictured right), now 16 and a member of the Filipino Martial Arts Academy, has been chosen for Great Britain’s World Escrima Kalis Arnis Federation cadet stick fighting squad. The team is competing in the World Championships in Hungary from July 23-27 and Amin, from Dongola Road, Stepney, is on the hunt for sponsors to back his battle for success by helping to fund training and safety equipment, and travel and accommodation costs. At the age of 14, Amin became the cadets’ British Champion in single stick fighting, was crowned cadet fighter of the day in December 2012 and has competed consistently at various competitions nationally. Amin, a pupil at Cooper’s and Coborn School in Essex, started martial arts aged five, competing in Shotokan Karate, and won gold medals at the English Open, Southern Regional Championships, and Maltese 4 Nations Open Competition, narrowly missing out on a medal in the Funakoshi World Championships. He achieved his first Dan black belt at the age of 11 and for several years has been learning Filipino martial arts. The WEKAF World Championships is a prestigious event held in 17 halls with the capacity of up to 1,500 spectators at each. Competitors from all over the world will compete over a week-long period in various events such as forms, single sticks, double sticks and other Filipino martial arts events. Team Amin is offering various sponsorship opportunities and backers will also be helping local talent succeed on an international stage while opening new doors for up-and-coming talent from Tower Hamlets. Although the WEKAF squad is tough to break into, Amin is relishing the prospect of trying for a gold medal. To get into the squad is a great achievement for a 16-year-old and sponsors would help him fulfil his dreams and do his country proud.
