The annual event, celebrating the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, was held at Minerva Community Centre in Bethnal Green, on August 6, for Tower Hamlets Community Housing residents. Guests ha d t h e chance to browse through different stalls and enjoy fun and games, including bouncy castles, chess and carrom (a south Asian board game), go-carting, and golf and basketball challenges. A Rollapaluza bike race, pitting two racers against each other over a quarter mile distance, proved popular along with the balloon artist, face painter and henna artist. Dancers from Taal Torango performed traditional Bengali dances and Bollywood dance routines, while Hackney City Farm took along two donkeys to give rides to youngsters. Several local organisations were represented, including Girl Guides, police cadets, Quaker Social Action, Bromley by Bow Centre, Social Action for Health and UK Youth Carrom Acadamy. Volunters from State Street Global Outreach also gave up their time. Terry Dungan, from Shadwell, enjoyed the day. Win an iPad in photo challenge A HOUSING association has launched a photography competition to mark its 20th anniversary, and is inviting residents to get snap happy and record their summer fun and seasonal memories. Organised by Swan Housing Group, the competition is open to everyone and forms part of the organisation’s efforts to raise £20,000 for the Swan Foundation, its charitable arm. The competition focuses on five category topics ranging from ‘local landmarks’ and ‘Swan property’ to ‘best selfie’ and The Volharding A dancer from Taal Torango ‘funniest pet picture’ and the allencompassing ‘community’. Each category is split into an under-16 and over-16 groups. The competition is open until October 31. There is a £5 entry fee and proceeds will go to the Swan Foundation. Prizes on offer include an iPad Air, a Windows Surface 2 tablet, Nokia smartphones and digital cameras as well as shopping vouchers. For more information, visit www.swan.org.uk/home/ news/enter-our-photographycompetition Carers off for a care-free trip YOUNG carers will take a break from their responsibilities this week and enjoy a trip on board a restored 120-year-old Dutch sailing barge. This Tuesday, August 19, the group will set off from Hermitage Community Moorings at Wapping for a day on the Volharding. The trip is organised by the charity-funded Volharding Project, which was set up to provide sailing opportunities for disadvantaged young people. O n e o f Vol h a r d i n g ’s supporting charities is Hermitage River Projects, which runs the moorings at Wapping. During this week’s trip the young people will have the chance to learn about and take part in sailing, experience the river from a different perspective and to enjoy a short time free from the pressures of their everyday lives.
