The Harbinger Primary School pupil won second prize in the primary school category of the competition run by CND, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Her poem, Peace by Piece, describes what peace means to her and urges everyone to seek it “in warmth, love and security”. Lisa Rønsholt Bounds, from Peace Education at CND, said: “This is a fantastic achievement.” Iona, 8, received her prize at Central Hall in Westminster. Iona said: “I am very honoured to get this prize and happy about my achievement. I hope that my poem helps people understand how important peace is and to value it.” We need residents with ideas and time to spare to help us improve our services. The Mythical Maze is the title of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, which runs until September 13 in the borough’s Idea Stores and libraries. The initiative is for children aged four to 11 who will be given a Mythical Maze poster when they join and the chance to win prizes. Every child who reads six books by completing the challenge will be given a certificate and a medal. Cllr Shafiqul Haque, cabinet Children are being encouraged to read six books or more during the holidays for the Summer Reading Challenge member for culture, said: “The challenge is all about getting children reading and developing a real passion for books.” T h e r e w i l l b e a f u l l programme of Mythical M a z e - t h e m e d eve n t s throughout the summer. Children can use an interactive Mythical Maze app to explore hidden surprises in the poster. Volunteers from secondary schools are providing one-to-one support for children. Supported by the Docklands Victims Association (DVA), which was formed in the aftermath of the 1996 IRA attack in Canary Wharf, the children’s global peace card programme aims to send messages to every world leader and area of conflict. So far, the children have sent 100 cards, including messages to the governments of Israel and Palestine, pleading with leaders to work together to enhance peace for the sake of all children. Hunna Ihsan, a 16-year-old youth leader with the DVA, said: “As a result of the tremendous religious and cultural diversity within east London, children of all creeds play and work together in peace. “We feel the rest of the world should try to follow their example.” Jonathan Ganesh, president of the DVA, who was injured in the 1996 bombing close to South Quay station, said: “We know that this programme will bring immense hope to all humanity. “I feel we have all had enough of conflict and terrorism. “This wonderful programme sends out a very positive message around the world that we owe it to all our children to find a better way forward.” Who will be Spitalfields Market top dog? COOL canines will strut their stuff at Old Spitalfields Market next week when the venue hosts the annual Paw Pageant. Run in aid of Battersea Dog & Cats Home, the show on Monday, August 25 from 1-3pm will feature a canine couture fashion show. And each pooch will be accompanied on stage by a human consort modelling designer brands. Visitors have the chance to showcase their own dogs on the catwalk, which will be judged by a panel in categories including ‘dressed up to the canines’ and ‘dog’s got talent’. Battersea Dog & Cats Home will be on site to provide free microchipping and dog tagging on the day. Visitors will also be able to enter a photo competition by submitting their snaps using the hashtag #pawpageant2014 The winner gets a £50 voucher for Old Spitalfields Market.
