Among their medal haul were golds in the boys’ under-19 football, table tennis doubles and ultimate frisbee. More than 200 aspiring sports stars from all over Tower Hamlets descended on Mile End to compete in the annual event. Organised by Tower Hamlets Youth Sport Foundation, the games are essentially a mini-Olympics, bringing together eight clubs from across the borough to compete in three multi-event festivals per year. Bow Hub Club were a close second with seven medals including gold in the girls’ under-19 football, boys’ under-15 football and girls’ basketball. Other notable performances included gold for Poplar in boys’ table tennis, a win for Globe Town in girls’ table tennis and gold for Bethnal Green in boys’ basketball. Richard Arlett, club and community manager, said: “The Hub Club Games programme is one of the highlights of the borough’s sporting calendar and continues to grow both in participation and sporting talent.” The 2015 Spring Hub Club Games for 12- to 19-year-olds, will take place in April. If you would like to get involved, either as a participant or a volunteer, contact Richard Arlett on 7987 4811 ext 359 or email richard.arlett@thysf.org Boxing KEVIN Mitchell is hoping it will be third time lucky when he fights Jorge Linares for the WBC world lightweight title at the start of the summer. Having failed in his two previous world title bids – against Michael Katsidis and Ricky Burns – the revitalised Mitchell gave a polished performance at the O2 arena to stop Mexican Daniel Estrada in eight rounds. Estrada was bemused and battered while Mitchell looked back to his clinical best. That win earned him the WBC Silver belt, and a shot at a genuine world title. It was one of Mitchell’s best performances as part of the Matchroom Stable but he knows this is his last shot at the big time. ■ Former Repton star Frank Buglioni will defend his WBO super-middleweight title at the O2 on February 28. Bugloni is now trained by former world super-middleweight champion Steve Collins after parting company with Mark and Jimmy Tibbs. POLISH welterweight Karl Ozimkowski, who trains under Alec Wilkey at Poplar’s Lansbury Club, will look to end his threefight losing streak in the pro ranks when he takes on Paul O’Brien, also winless after three fights, at York Hall on March 21. Basketball LONDON Lions beat Bristol Flyers at the Copper Box for the third time this season. Lions were led to their 78-65 victory by Drew Sullivan’s 17 points and seven rebounds. Makal Stibbins chipped in with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Zaire Taylor contributed nine assists and five steals. THE University of East London men’s basketball team cruised to a 94-69 point away win over their closest title rivals, Brunel, at the Brunel University Sports Centre, Uxbridge. The university’s netball team trounced the London School of Economics thirds 73-4 at the SportsDock to take their unbeaten run to five and their goal difference an astonishing 192.
