These were called Shuffle Festival and were linked to the East London Community Land Trust. The festival, which is curated by Oscar winning film director Danny Boyle, started as an initiative of the East London Community Land Trust, and is run by a group of individuals and aided by hundreds of volunteers. With development beginning at St Clement’s, Shuffle could no longer happen on site and we were approached about hosting the event. It did happen, and we hosted the five day spectacular from July 30 to August 3. Each of the five days had a topic and the first day kicked off with a nature theme. The day begun with Ken (our manager) and Dim (workshop leader for Setpoint London East) leading a forest school activity to a group of year 12 students. This was followed by a walk about butterflies and wild flowers. Shuffle then officially opened with a free feast for 500 local people. Visitors were welcomed by live music from the East London Community Band and were able to then move on to one of two screens, pitch themselves up on a picnic rug, grab a pint and popcorn, and settle down to watch either Gorillas in the Mist or Spirited Away. The evening concluded with a Q & A on evolution. The music and comedy tent showcased the best in music and comedy. Every evening, at least two movies were screened, walks were led, science taught, comedians made us laugh and bands entertained! On Saturday and Sunday the Shuffle Festival went on from midday until 10pm. During the day, on the Saturday, we had the Alternative Village Fete with a car boot disco, junk band, bug museum, total eclipse of the hair, space-hopper jousting and crockery smashing. Sunday was about celebrating death on the theme Day of the Dead, with sugar skull face painting, a human pyramid workshop, a death defying aerial act in the woods, and life and death drawing, to name but a few. The festival closed with a late night bat walk and singing from the British Humanist Association Choir. It was a wonderfully successful showcase for what can happen in the park, and showed that historic, closed cemeteries can be more than just a place of remembrance. They provide a peaceful and atmospheric backdrop for people to come together to enjoy each other’s company in Tower Hamlets’ most unique open space. If you’d like to visit Cemetery Park , join us for a walk and meet the Friends you can visit on Saturday, September 20 from 10.30am when we take part in London Open House Weekend. The annual meeting is at 4pm, followed by a talk by Stephanie Maltman on firemen and women in London during WWII.
