Since October 2010, a team with experience in emergency nursing has led research across three trust hospitals, including t h e R oya l L o n d o n i n Whitechapel. The team follows patients throughout their time in the hospital, collating information about their clinical progress to feed back to the research centres. The information enables clinicians and scientists to assess new therapies, gain further insight into the body’s response to trauma and acute illness, and improve care for future patients. David Martin, 28, became patient number 1,000 in July when he was enrolled in two trials as part of his care at the Royal London after being knocked unconscious and suffered bleeding on his brain in a fall from his bike. His head injury was so severe that he has no memory of the accident, or the ten days that followed. David was enrolled on a trial of medicine which may reduce further bleeding and cut the risk of disability and death. He said: “It’s quite exciting being part of new research, and it gives you the opportunity to access care that you wouldn’t otherwise get. “I trust the doctors and scientists, and there wouldn’t be medical progress if people didn’t take these opportunities.” David is also involved in another trial looking at whether people recovering from a brain injury can benefit from being cared for by a clinician who is trained in both neurology and occupational therapy. Jason Pott, lead emergency department research nurse, said: “We are incredibly David Martin on a cycling trip before the accident VISIT SIR JOHN CASS grateful to our 1,000 patients for their support. “Our success is also very much down to the enthusiasm of the doctors and nurses in the emergency departments, who play a vital role in helping us to recruit our patients.” GP contact boosts bowel cancer screening MORE people take up the offer of bowel screening when they are contacted by their GP. Screening aims to detect cancer early in people with no symptoms, when treatment is more likely to effective. It is estimated to reduce mortality rates from bowel cancer by 16 per cent. The NHS programme invites men and women aged 60-74 who are registered with a GP to complete a simple test at home every two years. Returning a test kit helps identify problems early, yet many Londoners do not take up the offer. But when 4,000 people in Tower Hamlets, Newham, Hackney and the City of London were contacted by their GPs about the test, the uptake was nearly ten per cent higher. Dr Somen Banerjee, director of Tower Hamlets Public Health, said “This little kit can save your life. Spotting cancer early saves lives, because treatment can be offered quickly and is often less complicated.” If you are aged 60 or above, you can get a free test kit by calling free phone 0800 707 6060. Cooking sessions for hungry teenagers TEENAGERS can learn how to rustle up a three-course meal from scratch. The council’s A Team Arts has received a grant to teach 13- to 19-year-olds how to make tasty, affordable and nutritious food to encourage good eating habits. The team already runs the House of Talent creative workshops each Thursday evening at the Brady Arts Centre in Whitechapel, but found many young people turned up at 6pm too hungry to concentrate. Teenagers can now join the Feed Your Talent sessions and experiment in creating dishes such as pizza, jerk chicken and fish and chips, as well as smoothies to wash it all down. Sessions start on September 11 from 4-6pm and run until October 30. Those who wish to stay on for fashion, drama or music workshops can do so.
