This year saw record breaking attendance with events such as Victoria Park’s Great Day Out and Mile End Play Park’s Day by the Sea, which both attracted more than 5,000 visitors. Both parks recreated traditional seaside resorts featuring a giant slide, a Victorian carousel, Punch and Judy, stilt walkers and donkey rides. Hundreds got fit and active at Sports & Healthy Living day in Victoria Park where youngsters challenged each other in sack racing, inflatable horse riding, sumo wrestling and bungee running. The event promoting healthy living got visitors dancing to the sound of music as the Zumba teacher encouraged residents of all ages to join in. Long queues formed as youngsters waited to pedal themselves to a healthy drink with the smoothie bikes while professionals provided advice on how to make great tasting smoothies at home. Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “The annual Sports & Play Festival has been steadily growing in popularity amongst our residents. I’m pleased so many families took advantage of these free events which offer a wide variety of activities for all ages.” Families join in a tug of war at Victoria Park 18 NEWS FROM TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 8 – 14 SEPTEMBER 2014
