News United to support vulnerable people Link to community organisations Local Link is a collaboration between Real, Age UK East London, Alzheimer’s Society, Apasenth, Bromley by Bow Centre, deafPLUS, Mencap, Positive East and Tower Hamlets Law Centre. details below BY JESSICA ODUBAYO NINE community organisations have come together to provide shared support for different groups of vulnerable people. Local Link, funded by the council, is a collaboration between organisations for deaf and disabled people, older residents and people with long-term health conditions. Together they provide support such as social care, housing, financial and benefits advice, volunteering, leisure, health and employment. The organisations have established six information hubs across the borough, to make support accessible to residents. When residents first contact Local Link, staff or volunteers will see if they can help straight away. If further help is required, staff at the hubs will book an appointment with a specialist from a Local Link organisation or help find another solution. The hubs are also equipped with computers where residents can search for information online. Call 7001 2175, email locallink@ real.org.uk or visit a hub between 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday, at the following locations: Age UK East London – Appian Court Resource Centre, 87 Parnell Road, E3 Apasenth – Carmine Wharf, 30 Copenhagen Place, E14 deafPLUS – First Floor, Trinity Centre, Key Close, E1 Bromley by Bow Centre – St Leonard’s Street, enter the hub via Bruce Road, E3 Positive East – 159 Mile End Road, E1 Real – Jack Dash House, 2 Lawn House Close, E14. SPECIALIST gym Ability Bow welcomed residents to an open day, which featured presentations and demonstrations about its services. Ability Bow helps people with disabilities to become fitter and lead more independent lives through exercise. Residents were invited to the open day to explore the gym’s facilities, speak to staff and gym users, and listen to talks about the importance of exercise in tackling diabetes and mental health. Visit www.abilitybow.co.uk for further information about the gym and its GP referral process.
