If you have the passion to turn your ideas into reality or are motivated to expand your current business, then look no further than the council’s Idea Stores and libraries. The council’s flagship library, learning and information centre, Idea Store Whitechapel in Whitechapel Road, will be hosting free business workshops for fledgling entrepreneurs on the last Tuesday of every month, from 6.30-8.30pm. Its first business workshop, on March 25, run with business support enterprise GLE, attracted more than 40 participants who were taught the basics of how to set up a business. Future workshops include: ■ Tuesday, April 29 – funding and mentoring for new entrepreneurs ■ Tuesday, May 27 – pathway to self-employment ■ Tuesday, June 24 – small businesses: get on top of your taxes ■ Tuesday, July 29 – introduction to digital marketing for small businesses. Idea Store Whitechapel Residents who are keen to take their business ideas further can take advantage of courses run by Idea Store Learning, the council’s adult education service. Whether you want to run a market stall, a shop or a homebased business, these courses will point you in the right direction. To find out more call 7364 1742 or visit www.ideastore.co.uk Theatre gets lick of paint BANK staff spent a day at a children’s theatre, where they cleaned the seating and painted the floor, ready for the start of a new season. Eight employees from Barclays in Canary Wharf worked at the Half Moon, in White Horse Road, Limehouse. Alun Jones from Barclays said: “The theatre does so much for the local community. The day was really worthwhile for all.” Chris Elwell, director of Half Moon, said: “We are extremely grateful to the team.” Emrana Akthar from the East London Business Alliance, which runs the project putting private sector companies in touch with voluntary organisations, said: “I hope the children and young people who use Half Moon enjoy their newly decorated space.” The volunteers take a break from their work Opening shows there’s life in the old pub yet A NEW pub has opened in Bromley-by-Bow, bucking the national trend of closures. The Galvanisers Union opened its doors to customers in Devas Street earlier this month, selling local and regional craft beers and real ales, as well as spirits and wines. The pub dates back to 1872 when it opened as the Duke of Wellington. It was re-built in the 1920s as part of social housing development. With manager Robin Webster at the helm, the Union has plans to begin serving food in the near future. MEMBERS of a Whitechapel youth group gained an insight into the operations of a multi-million pound business, when they were shown behind the scenes of Waitrose Canary Wharf. The group of 11 (some of whom are pictured above) from Newark Youth were given a tour of the store and underwent mock interviews. The group were given feedback and information about a career in retail. Innovation Bursary Scheme open for applications NHS Tower Hamlets Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is delighted to announce the third year of its Innovation Bursary Scheme. A total bursary fund of £80,000 will be made available to organisations in the community and voluntary sector. This will be used to fund innovative projects that support NHS Tower Hamlets CCG’s key strategic goals for improving health services and health outcomes in the borough. NHS Tower Hamlets CCG is inviting not-for-profit, voluntary organisations to apply for funding of up to £20,000 per project. The Innovation Bursary Scheme will be open for applications from 1 May until 1 June 2014.
