A hate crime is any criminal offence where the victim is targeted because of their race or ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, gender identity, disability, age, sexual orientation or any other difference. Crimes should be reported by calling 999 in an emergency or on 101 in a non-emergency situation. Alternatively, victims can contact the council’s victim support line on 8555 8254 or report it to a third party reporting centre. To find a centre near you, go to www.towerhamlets.gov. uk/hatecrime Gender-based crime will be on the agenda for November’s Youth Voices conference. This one-day conference – the first of its kind by any local authority in the UK – aims to raise awareness of gender-based violence and of specialist support services for young people. By working with young people to develop the conference, the council’s community safety team is asking them to help raise awareness and offering professionals ideas and suggestionsfor how to meet their needs. We have now held a number of community safety ward surgeries and walkabouts – the next few sessions will also coincide with the launch of the new mobile police office. This specially-converted van will be able to support police and Tower Hamlets enforcement officers (THEOs) in helping prevent crime in the borough. The vehicle can be mobilised quickly for events or to help police in emergency situations. It will be used to visit areas where crime is high but reporting low, and at events as a community safety liaison and contact point. The mobile police office will support officers in busy areas such as Brick Lane on weekend evenings, and be in attendance at safer transport police, community safety and London Fire Brigade awareness open days and events. Meanwhile, we continue to bear down on anti-social behaviour. New legislation will give victims and communities a say in the way anti-social behaviour is dealt with. The Community Trigger allows the borough’s residents to ask the council to review certain complaints of anti-social behaviour in their local area. The public can complain via the council website, phone, email or in writing. Members of the public can log a trigger if they have previously reported three separate incidents over the past six months, including one in the last three months, and no action has been taken. These trigger requests are then referred to a multi-agency panel. The process is designed to ensure that partners work together to try and address any longstanding anti-social behaviour issues. The legislation is part of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. The Community Trigger can only be used for anti-social behaviour complaints – it cannot be used to report crime, including hate crime.
