The annual inter-borough competition drew more than 600 competitors from 17 boroughs to the Copper Box Arena in Stratford on October 17. The event, organised by leisure centre operator Better, was aimed at encouraging older people to become more active and to highlight the social and physical benefits of sport. A team of 35 from Tower Hamlets competed in activities including badminton, table tennis, short tennis, swimming, timed cycling, dominoes, darts and short mat bowls. They put in a sterling performance in the pool – winning gold thanks to Amira Wooley, Maris Ozols and Peter Eldridge. Greenwich took first in the overall contest with Tower Hamlets fourth. Winners were presented with their awards by Tessa Sanderson, TV personality and 1984 Olympic javelin gold medallist. Tower Hamlets’ success is testament to the council’s Young @ Heart programme.
