The National Literacy Trust’s second annual Where’s Wally? fun run raised over £60,000. On the sidelines, hundreds of supporters cheered on the Wallys to make it to the finish line, while parents and kids had lots of fun playing games and running mini-races. Soccer round-up Poplar title move POPLAR made it three consecutive games unbeaten, defeating Newark in the second phase of the Community Football League which moves them into second place in Division One. Poplar attacked non-stop in the first 20 minutes and in the 25th minute a corner was flicked on to Shajim who scored an acrobatic goal. Change was made at half-time and Poplar applied the pressure again with substitute Ruhel heading in a corner to make it 2-0. Hamlets share the top spot on points TOWER Hamlets kept pace with Great Wakering Rovers in the title race with victory at Mile End Stadium and both teams are now joint top and level on points. Great Wakering have a superior goal difference so Tower Hamlets can only hope their rivals drop points before the end of the season. Having drawn level on points with the leaders following their 3-1 win at Greenhouse, Hamlets opened the scoring on their own turf as Kane Wilson netted. Luke With doubled the lead just before half-time, having been on target alongside Tom Harvey and Jay Taylor at Greenhouse, and Isaac made it 3-0 midway through the second half. Basildon grabbed a consolation before the final whistle, but could not prevent AJ Olatunbosun’s side extending their unbeaten run to 12 matches ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Hullbridge. Elsewhere in the Essex Senior League, fellow east Londoners Sporting Bengal drew with Ilford at Cricklefield Stadium. A goal from Bobby Redwood put Bengal ahead and Yasser Rashid had two chances to extend the lead before halftime, only for Ilford to level through Ryan Gardiner’s header. Sporting regained the upper hand when Rashid slotted home after two earlier attempts had been blocked, but Ilford got a late equaliser at a corner when a Sporting defender put the ball into his own net. Gothia Cup hopes FC Hamlets under-16 squad is ready to compete in the Gothia Cup in Sweden. The club is looking for funding to take the team from the borough to the world’s biggest youth tournament and hopefully be the first team from London to win the trophy.
