The Brick Lane area has thousands of tourists and visitors every week, sampling its unique mixture of cultural destinations, restaurants, shops, clubs and Nurse Nancy, 95! AN inspirational ex-nurse stepped out of retirement to give a talk to her modern-day counterparts. Ninety-five-year-old Nancy Hayes addressed nurses attending a Mental Health Care of Older People Forum run by East London NHS Foundation Trust. Mrs Hayes gave a talk on June 10 about her experiences as a nurse in the borough and hospital life before the NHS. She trained in the early 1940s at St George-in-the-East hospital in Wapping, which had 406 beds. Mrs Hayes worked in Tower Hamlets for many years. She was a key local Royal College of Nursing union representative and was involved with health debates, including the controversial move to allow male nurses to train as midwives. At the forum, she spoke of the many changes in the health service in her lifetime, adding most were for the better, particularly nurses’ pay structure. Mrs Hayes retired in 1984 and now lives in Dagenham. Carmel Stevenson, trust lead nurse for mental health care of older people, said:“Staff found Nancy’s talk very stimulating, humorous and enlightening. “The meeting went over time as staff had so many questions to ask her. We want her to write her memoirs!” 23 – 29 JUNE 2014 N E W S F R OM TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 3
