For everyone wanting to showcase their skills or talent, we are encouraging the businesses to become patrons of the arts by displaying artwork or hosting a gig; it’s trying to get everyone aware of the pool of talent and entrepreneurship we have in Bow.” All events are free, although one or two will ask for a charity donation, and shops and businesses are offering special offers, discounts and rare treats during the festival. The closing street party includes music performances, children’s entertainment, a host of stalls and the men’s Wimbledon final shown live on a big screen. The festival, to be staged in shops and businesses in the Roman Road area, will run from Sunday, June 29 and end with a street party finale on Sunday, July 6. It is one of the largest projects from the new Mayor’s Local Community Ward Forums. The forums were launched in December last year. Each of the wards in the borough has its own forum, run by residents, which has up to £10,000 to spend on enhancing the local community. The Bow Forum has partfunded the festival using some of its allocated budget. Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “I am delighted to see the forum funds contributing to making this cultural festival a reality for local people.” The festival will feature dozens of events, including a pop-up cinema, art displays, pizza-making, circus skills, music, spa sessions, DJ mixing, and a monologue from renowned local playwright Simon Stephens. Festival director Tabitha Stapely said the event would not be happening without the forum’s support. She said: “These things do cost quite a lot of money and it’s In praise of the volunteers next week. EDDIE GOES EAST BY JESSICA ODUBAYO ELDERLY and vulnerable residents are being warned against falling v i c tim to so- called courier fraud, following 43 reports of the crime to Tower Hamlets Police over the last year. BBC London radio presenter Eddie Nestor hit the streets of Tower Hamlets on Tuesday, June 17 with Mayor Lutfur Rahman, on a whistle-stop tour of the borough. He visited regeneration schemes including Poplar Baths and the Ocean Estate in Stepney, St Paul’s Way Trust School and East London Central Synagogue. Eddie, right, is pictured outside the synagogue with (from left) Mayor Rahman, chair of Tower Hamlets inter-faith forum Rev Alan Green and Leon Silverman, synagogue president. The crooks then convince the person to reveal their PIN number and hand their credit or debit card to a courier or taxi driver, who may not know they are being used as part of the scam. The victim may be asked to ring the number on the back of their card, thereby further convincing the victim that the call is genuine. However, the scammer keeps the line open so that the victim unknowingly talks to another member of the gang, posing as a bank employee. Earlier this year, trainee special constable Naiem Hussain was jailed for two years for trying to cheat 86-year-old Doris King out of £10,000. The 21-yearold, from Mansell Street in Whitechapel, took Mrs King to her bank to withdraw the money after telling her she may be prosecuted if she did not co-operate. Suspicious bank staff called the police and Hussain was arrested. Borough police commander Dave Stringer said: “These crimes affect people who are among the most vulnerable in our community.
