Tournament marks end of ten-week schools project BY JESSICA ODUBAYO TEN weeks of football has helped 87 fathers of different ages, religious, social and cultural backgrounds build bridges with one another, become involved in their children’s education and adopt more active and healthier lifestyles. The Fathers Football project, which is part-funded by the council’s parent and family support service and run by community scheme Ambassadors Football, encouraged dads and male carers to participate in football coaching sessions and other activities at their children’s schools. The men also joined in fathers’ forums and social events. The project culminated in a tournament at Mile End Stadium, which saw participating schools play against each other. Teams representing community organisations and eight primary schools – including Marion Richardson, Old Palace Marner and Globe –battled it out on the pitch in the final league play-off for the Fathers’ Football trophy. Seven Mills Primary School, Isle of Dogs and Booth House, Whitechapel, reached the final and Seven Mills lifted the cup thanks to a 1-0 win. Player of the tournament was Ramsay who played for Seven Mills. Players of the season were Foqrul from Marner, Shelim from Marion Richardson, Wan from Globe vs Old Palace Cubbitt Town and Alyiass, from Globe. Denise Hickford, council parent support adviser, said: “Many of the fathers have g o n e o n t o participate in other school activities, such as becoming parent governors, healthy family parent ambassadors, and supporting fun days and sports days.” Gareth Haddow, schools co-ordinator and community outreach worker for Ambassadors Football, said: “The relationships built with the dads have led to stronger relationships being built with families across the community.” Seven Mills and Booth House in the final Two players challenge for the ball 10 NEWS FROM TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 23 – 29 JUNE 2014
