The council is working with Gateway Housing Association and Sainsbury’s to provide young people with two weeks of work experience at the supermarket’s Whitechapel store after completing a short training and qualification course. The participants will finish with an accredited qualification from City and Guilds. The scheme is being piloted in an area identified as having high rates of anti-social behaviour, and is targeting young people who are not in education, employment or training, known as NEETS. Cllr Oliur Rahman, deputy mayor and cabinet member for economic development, said: “We aim for the scheme not only to provide young people with useful work experience but also to gain confidence when applying for future opportunities.” To qualify, young people will need to undergo 12 hours of training. The two-week placements take eight people at a time, providing 20 hours of work experience a week. Sayeed Hussain, 17, who is taking part in the scheme, said: “I’m more confident interacting with people and I think this is a good opportunity for young people like myself.” For more information contact Cam Lieng on 7364 0384 or cam .lieng@towerhamlets.gov.uk The Tower Project working on the float; (below) Poetry in Wood preparations towerhamlets.gov.uk Rising to the Lord Mayor’s challenge BY JESSICA ODUBAYO TWO charities in Tower Hamlets have received funding to take part in the Lord Mayor’s Show next month. The Tower Project in Limehouse and Poetry in Wood, based in Spitalfields, will each receive £15,000 from the City of London Corporation for their floats. The theme of the Tower Project’s float will be ‘a wall of aspiration’, a giant illustration created by disabled children and adults from the borough. Each brick in the wall represents their career aspirations for their future and on the day participants will be dressed in the work uniform of their chosen career. The group is busy building the float and so far has illustrated professions such as servicemen, bankers, teachers, scientists and even the Lord Mayor. Those involved in the project will have their work accredited by Tower Project’s job enterprise Taking part will extend the range of things students can achieve.” Jacqueline Remfry and training service to achieve a craft skills qualification. Poetry in Wood will enter a ‘helping hand’ float in the show – sporting a huge hand supporting a large tree as well as a seven-foot-high figure shown supporting a smaller person. The float will be decorated with flying birds, butterflies and flowers made by the students and workers who will flank the float, holding giant mock-ups of the tools they used, such as hammers and saws. Graham Smithers, head of services at the Tower Project, said: “Many of the disabled people we work with can lack confidence. Taking part in the Lord Mayor’s Show will be challenging, but overcoming this barrier together with our support will help participants build self-belief.” Poetry in Wood manager Jacqueline Remfry said: “This project is all about independence, and taking part in the Lord Mayor’s Show will extend the range of things our students and workers can achieve. “We want to show that having learning disabilities means you are able to take your place in the wider community.” This year’s Lord Mayor’s Show, on Saturday, November 8, will celebrate 800 years since the sealing of Magna Carta – ‘the Charter of Liberties’, which led to the creation of the post of Lord Mayor. 14–23 NOVEMBER Dance umbrella WÁJRYXNGOU WÁJRYXNGOU East London festivals... 14–31 OCTOBER Latin american theatre Festival 10–19 OCTOBER 27–30 NOVEMBER ...PLUS MUCH MORE!
