Last week, at its headquarters in Cheshire Street, Bethnal Green, the club unveiled the new look before a gathering of past and present boxing celebrities. The works included better men’s and women’s changing and shower facilities, new flooring and lighting, and will help the club continue its 130- year uninterrupted delivery of community sport and boxing Repton is the biggest amateur boxing club in Europe and the improvements to the fabric of the Bath House were essential, as was the continued investment in high quality coaching and the growth of the community sports network. The refurbished facilities will help the club grow, sustain participation and build on its outstanding record of success, which includes producing world champions such as John H Stracey, Maurice Hope, Leslie Stewart and Darren Barker. Welcoming guests, including Hope, club secretary Dave Robinson said: “The Sport England post-London 2012 legacy investment into Repton was important in order that this club could continue its long association with Tower Hamlets and continue to provide first class facilities. “This club has a great history and making sure we offer top training facilities will ensure Repton can continue to make Tower Hamlets proud. “And what we have achieved so far is testament to the hard work of men like Tony Burns, Kelvin Wing and Bobby Beck.” The money was part of an investment by Powerday through its London boxing development programme. Repton could be heading for another cash windfall. The club will receive a further £50,000 if rising star Ryan Pickard wins Paco Rabanne’s Invictus Award. Pickard has been competing in Corsica, Morocco and Iceland against six other athletes in challenges such as horse riding, quad-biking, ballooning, canyoning and desert running. YouTube viewers will vote for the winner who will claim the cash prize for their club.
