Bow-based group The Geezers want to hear residents’ stories and photos for their project entitled Where’s My Boozer Gone? Birthday dame COMMUNITY arts organisation Poplar Film is celebrating actress Dame Angela Lansbury’s 89th birthday by releasing an exclusive interview with her at the local film festival held in her honour earlier this year. The capacity of the school has been more than doubled and the extra space has allowed the former boys’ school to take in girls for the first time. It has also opened a sixth form. Head teacher Cath Smith said: “The wonderful new building provides a fantastic and stimulating learning environment for our children.” The council worked with building firm Bouygues UK to deliver the new school, at Bow Lock, on time and on budget. Mayor Rahman said: “The new Bow School is a wonderful achievement and a shining beacon of the investment we have made in our young people. “Students at Bow School have been performing brilliantly for years in sub-standard buildings; now they have the state-of-the-art facilities they deserve they will be able to reach even greater heights.” The completion of the new school means that over the past few years, the A pupil interviewed at the opening council has refurbished or rebuilt all of the borough’s 18 secondary schools at a cost of more than £300 million, through the government’s Building Schools for the Future programme. Cllr Gulam Robbani, cabinet member for education and children’s services, said: THE Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Tower of London’s Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red poppy installation last Thursday. Volunteers have been planting thousands of ceramic poppies in the moat. There is one for each British and Colonial World War I fatality – 888,246 in total. The final poppy will be ‘planted’ on Armistice Day, November 11, before the whole collection is sold. A wreath of poppies was presented to the Queen who later attended a service in the Tower’s newly refurbished Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula, which dates back to the early 1500s. News in brief Fighting inequality THE council has been making big strides towards reducing health and social inequalities. Figures released last week by the Campaign to End Child Poverty indicated Tower Hamlets had the highest levels of child poverty in the UK. Mayor Lutfur Rahman said that despite the figures, the council continued to work with its partners in tackling the issues that lead to poverty. Initiatives are aimed at giving young people a quality education, providing further opportunities to get people into work and helping reduce costs for families.
