The international day was created to recognise and celebrate the achievements that older people make to society. LinkAge Plus, which works to improve wellbeing and reduce social isolation of those aged 50 and over, were hosts at the Bethnal Green venue last Tuesday, October 14. The Tower Hamlets organisation laid on a range of activities, stalls and refreshments for the 200-plus visitors, who included Poplar & Limehouse MP Jim Fitzpatrick. Dave Barnard, head of community services at Toynbee Hall, said: “It was a really brilliant day celebrating older people. As the lead partner of LinkAge Plus, it was a real encouragement 250 people from all over Tower Hamlets coming together for food, made-to-order smoothies, back massages, tai chi and chairbased exercise. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, our eldest visitor was a 103-year-old gentleman! It previously won the prestigious accolade – the Green Flag People’s Choice Award – in 2012 and was a runner-up last year. Vicky Park came out on top against competition from 1,482 Green Flag sites. The park retained its Green Flag Award earlier this year. Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “I am delighted Victoria Park has reclaimed its title as the UK’s best loved open space. It is our flagship park and a fantastic asset which is enjoyed by thousands of visitors and residents alike.” Cllr Shafiqul Haque, cabinet member for culture, added: “The council works hard to ensure all parks and open spaces are maintained to an excellent standard. “I would like to congratulate the parks team for their dedication and commitment as our parks provide essential recreation, play and leisure facilities.” Victoria Park, which was given a £12 million revamp in 2011, boasts 86 hectares of lush greenery as well as a boating lake, bandstand, two children’s play areas and a Wheelpark.
