Date at No 10 Megan Simkins had a date at No 10 last week so she could say thank you to a cancer charity for their care. see below News News in brief How alcohol can ruin lives BY ANNA WILSON THE council is highlighting issues surrounding alcohol misuse during Alcohol Awareness Week, running from November 17-23. Led by national charity Alcohol Concern, this year’s campaign theme is Facing our alcohol problem: Taking back our health and high streets. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the impact alcohol misuse can have on health, families and communities. Although Tower Hamlets has a large group of people who don’t drink for religious or cultural reasons, of those who do drink, 4 in 10 are classified as harmful drinkers compared to 2 in 10 nationally. During Alcohol Awareness Week, the council’s Drug and Alcohol Action Team and its partners will be delivering training Megan’s thanks for cancer charity support David Dimbleby, Megan Simpkins, Samantha Cameron, Annie Bodenham, Jonathan Dimbleby, and Ben Elliott at Number 10 WAPPING resident Megan Simpkins attended a private reception at 10 Downing Street to talk about the support a cancer care charity gave her during her illness. Megan, 54, benefited from Dimbleby Cancer Care’s facilities while she was treated for cancer of the womb. The charity was set up in 1966 to educate staff on referring people into services as well as public sessions and events. Cllr Abdul Asad, lead member for health and adults services, said: “These free sessions will focus on the wider issues of alcohol and the free treatment available, opening up conversation about any concerns.” The Tower Hamlets community alcohol team (THCAT) will host information stalls with a variety of interactive displays and a quiz to raise awareness. The stalls will be on: Monday, November 17 from 1.30-4pm at Bow Idea Store, 1 Gladstone Place, Roman Road, E3; Tuesday, November 18 from 1.30-5pm at Canary Wharf Idea Store, Churchill Place, E14; Wednesday, November 19 from 1.30-5pm at Watney Market Idea Store, 260 Commercial Rd, E1; Thursday, November 20 from 1.30-5pm at Chrisp Street Idea Store, 1 Vesey in memory of renowned broadcaster Richard Dimbleby and is based at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals in London. Its aim is to provide practical and psychological support to people living with cancer and to their families and carers. On Tuesday, November 18, from 11am- 3pm, the drug and alcohol interventions team will be at at Bow Idea Store providing information about alcohol services in the borough and assessing those interested in determining their level of risk. On Wednesday, November 19 from 2-4pm THCAT will be hold- I am deeply grateful for the services they provided and the care they gave me. “I wouldn’t have got through it without them and I am delighted to share my experience and talk about the impact this charity had on my life.” She attended the reception on November 11, which was held in partnership with the Quintessentially Foundation. School fair CHRISTCHURCH Primary School in Brick Lane will be getting into the festive spirit with a Christmas fair on Friday, November 28 from 3.30-5pm. The event will feature Santa’s grotto, the sale of locally designed Christmas cards and gifts and a police horse. Entrance is 50p and proceeds will go towards the playground development fund. Shop and chat STAFF at East London NHS Foundation Trust will be at Sainsburys in Whitechapel on November 20 as part of Alcohol Awareness Week. They will be talking to shoppers from 2-6pm about safe drinking levels. There will be an alcohol quiz with prizes, lots of useful info and mocktails. ing a drop-in session at The Carers Centre, 21 Brayford Square in Stepney. This will give information about the team’s 12-step awareness programme and is open for anyone who wants to find out more about support options for themselves, family members or friends. On Friday, November 21 from 11am-4pm, THCAT is hosting a session on how they can help you or relatives with recovery. It takes place at 22 Skylines Village, Limeharbour, E14. The council has recently launched a national scheme locally known as Best Bar None (BBN) that works to build relationships with licensed establishments and tackle anti-social behaviour. Awards are being presented to licensed premises on November 17 that have achieved BBN status. Dr Somen Banerjee, director of public health for the council, said: “Although many people may use alcohol responsibly, regularly drinking more than the recommended amount can lead to serious health harm such as liver disease, heart disease, stroke, cancer and mental health problems.” Information on the Change 4 Life website – www.nhs.uk/ Change4Life – can help you track how much you are drinking and provide further advice on cutting back on alcohol.
