Learning why we remember “We wanted to create something that would give the children and local community a greater understanding of Remembrance Day,” Anne Edwards, Harry Gosling Primary School. see below Why poppies? The poppy was one of the only plants to grow on the battlefields of northern France and Flanders. News Inspired by Tower display The poppy artwork at Harry Gosling Primary School BY JESSICA ODUBAYO INSPIRED by the field of ceramic poppies at the Tower of London, staff and pupils at Harry Gosling Primary School in Aldgate created their very own poppy installation in the school playground. Humanities co-ordinator Anne Edwards, who organised the temporary display, said: “We wanted to create something that would give the children and local community a greater understanding of Remembrance Day.” Each child, from reception upwards, made a poppy using either paper or clay. CHILDREN at Manorfield Primary School in Poplar marked Remembrance Day by creating handmade poppies to place in the school’s fruit orchard (left). The youngsters worked with artist in residence John Mayson throughout the day to make the memorial. Year 4 pupil Afnan (right) is pictured placing his poppy on the memorial tree. NEWS FROM TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY Making the borough a fairer place to live REMEMBERING THOSE WE LOST Events to mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day took place throughout the borough last week. Chloe, 8, joined her family at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission memorial in Trinity Square Gardens on Remembrance Sunday. The memorial commemorates those from the Merchant Navy and fishing fleets who died during both world wars and have “no grave but the sea”. See pages 2, 18 & 19 for more events. BY SUSAN MULLIGAN TOWER Hamlets Fairness Commission is “impressed with the significant progress” that has been made over the past year to make the borough a fairer place for residents. The commission published a report, Tower Hamlets – Time to Act, at the end of September 2013. The report made 16 recommendations relating to money and financial inclusion, employment and housing, which aimed to improve the lives of the borough’s residents. In its review of work done to deliver the recommendations, the commission praised the council’s energy co-op for “making affordable energy a reality for residents”. The commission’s vision for Tower Hamlets as “an online borough” began to be realised when hundreds of residents took advantage of free activities designed to improve their digital skills in October’s Get Online week. Free internet access is now also available at all Idea Stores. The commission’s recommendation to “reimagine local employment services so they • 2-5 Years Guaranteed Rent •0% Commission 020 8983 4444 3 Months rent in advance paid!* * Terms & conditions apply work better for local people and businesses” is being helped through a new agreement between the council and Job Centre Plus, which will support residents into jobs. Tower Hamlets’ Education Business Partnership is also launching the ‘750 club’ to secure pledges from local employers to provide high-quality work experience placements. The commission was concerned that “the standard of private rented accommodation was improved, and tenants better protected through a landlord licensing scheme for Tower Hamlets”. A local scheme to license landlords has been developed by the council. Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “I am proud of the support that the council has provided in delivering the commission’s recommendations, and we are committed to ensuring the positive outcomes continue for our residents.” Graham Fisher, chief executive of Toynbee Hall and Fairness Commissioner, said: “One year on, it’s great to hear just how much has been achieved.” milltec IT T distributors LAPTOPS ease hp 8460p Intel Core i7 hp 2540p Intel Core i7 hp 610 Core 2 Duo All above with webcam ONE YEAR WARRANTY 020 7739 3959 07913 912 911 ONE YEAR WARRANTY WITH 17” TFT £90 PC Ex-Le ONE YEAR WARRANTY 020 7791 1200 020 7729 9981 0 490 Bethnal Green Rd, E2 0EA Only 247 Bethnal Green Rd, E2 6AB Mayor’s column………......................................……..6 Useful information………......................................……..8 Foodies Festival………......................................…….....10 History………......................................……...................13 Council information……….............................14 & 15 Harmony………......................................…….....16 & 17 On Armistice Day, November 11, Ms Edwards gave a talk in assembly and told the pupils to think about people from different countries who lost their lives in war.
