Sport More than messing about in boats “This is a wonderful opportunity for local young people to have fun, make new friends, get out on the water and gain nationally accredited qualifications outside of mainstream education.” County clash An east London XI will take on an Essex County Cricket Club second XI on May 12 at Wanstead Cricket Club. see below MMA Darren closes in on York Hall debut MIXED Martial Arts, one of the fastest growing sports in Britain, is coming to York Hall, Bethnal Green – and Darren Stewart wants to be one of its stars. Darren, from Rosefield Gardens, Poplar who trains in north London, faces Lloyd Clarkson in his third professional fight on May 23. Darren, a corporate security specialist, had five fights unbeaten as an amateur and is now bidding for his third successive victory. His last win came on the Cage Warriors show at the CopperBox in Stratford’s Olympic Park. This time out, Darren fights for relatively new promotion outfit Warrior Fight Series (WFS) on a show headlined by Jake Bostwick, the seventh ranked welterweight fighter in Britain. Darren is excited to be putting on a show in front of his own east London fans and said: “Fighting for WFS is new to me, so it’s a great opportunity to see what this show is about. “I’ve heard great things about it already and the fight is so local to where I live, the atmosphere is going to be madness.” His opponent, Lloyd Clarkson is said to be a tough opponent, but Darren admits: “No matter who I fight, I always respect them. I’m not a trash talker as I don’t believe in it. “I know Lloyd has solid skills, but so do I.” Darren, 24, a father of one, wants to go right to the top in the sport and make his future financially secure. If he can do this he hopes it will lead to fights with the universally renowed Universal Fighting Championship (UFC), the global leaders in mixed martial arts. It takes place on May 12 at Wanstead Cricket Club and will be the third match between the two sides. The east London team will have representatives from Tower Hamlets in their side. The theme for the day is the importance of staying healthy. Basketball Lions slip up twice TWO away defeats in a week have left London Lions fighting to hold on to fifth place in the British Basketball League. Following their 87-81 reverse at Leicester Riders, they went to Glasgow Rocks and suffered an 82-65 loss. Glasgow put together a great team effort to gain ground on the Lions. Five players reached double figures for Glasgow, with Reggie Middleton leading the way with 17 points and six rebounds. Paul Egwuonwu and Danny Huffor added 14 points apiece in the win. Meanwhile, Lovell Cook had a game-high 18 points for Lion’s, with Makal Stibbins chipping in with 15 points and eight boards. Andrew Sullivan also finished with 15 points. The defeat at Leicester saw Makal Stibbins 22 points eclipsed by Rashad Hassan’s 32 and 17 rebounds as Leicester held on at the death to topple London. Riders had to stave off a final quarter comeback by the Lions who had trailed by as many as 18 points early in the fourth period. In a dramatic finale, Lions almost drew level inside the last minute of the contest after Zaire Taylor converted to make it a one-shot game. Lions are still fifth, but the Rocks are just four points behind them with two matches in hand so the finale to the season will be tough and tense.
