News As a new round of community ward forum meetings starts this week, Stefan Swift reflects on the 2013/14 programme which saw 53 projects commissioned across Tower Hamlets. A busy year ahead for Champions A NEW cohort of the Mayor’s Community Champion Co-ordinators will join existing Champions to lead the new round of community ward forum meetings starting this week. The 2014/15 co-ordinators will facilitate community meetings in each ward to help residents set local priorities and decide how best to spend funding in their areas. The 2013/14 programme of 53 projects across the borough helped thousands of residents in a number of ways, including through festivals, education, business development, healthy eating and environmental Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “The Mayor’s Community Champion Co-ordinators and local ward forums provided residents with some truly wonderful projects last year. “By extending the scheme to a second year we are confident that there will be another programme of events and improvements to bring our diverse communities together for the benefit of all residents.” Festivals Bow East and Bow West forums joined together to support the Roman Road Festival (pictured above), bringing the community together for a week-long programme to celebrate and promote the area. The funding provided the catalyst for the dedicated team of volunteers to go on to secure external sponsorship for this ambitious venture. discounted healthy food to children. Mile End East forum funded a foodgrowing project for children and incorporated this into their leisure activities. The Mile End & Globe Townforum paid for a homework club for children on the Ocean Estate. Transformation Russia Lane improvements were funded by the Bethnal Green North forum to help transform the area through cleaning, landscaping and the painting of garage and shed doors. The Allen Gardens improvement project saw native fruit and deciduous trees planted to help improve the look of the area – funded by the Spitalfields & Banglatown forum. Weavers forum funded the creation of the Weavers Green Trail and app, which allows residents to join organised walks with guides covering places of interest in the ward and its local history. Residents can upload comments/feedback via the app and check out the trail. Bromley-by-Bow forum funded a money advice project to provide financial advice and guidance to those feeling the impact of the recession. St Katharine’s & Wapping created a business hub for people who wanted to create businesses and provided access to computers and the internet. Young people St Dunstan’s & Stepney Green forum funded a mobile healthy eating van – Soul Food Rocks (pictured above) – in conjunction with the council’s public health department. The Limehouse Festival was attended by 2,000 residents and funded by the Limehouse forum. They were also able to host an Intergenerational Festival to bring the whole community together. Education Blackwall & Cubitt Town funded a Silver Surfers computer skills exchange – a project that has seen youth volunteers assisting older people to become computer literate. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes were provided for women thanks to funding from the Millwall forum. Business and enterprise Bethnal Green South and Whitechapel forums funded a youth enterprise programme, teaching entrepreneurial skills to young people from a panel of business experts.
