This busy time of year can certainly take its toll. We vow to make positive changes and turn over a new leaf with a regime of regular exercise and lots of fruit and vegetables. This is a great approach, as we can all take steps to improve our health. But let’s be honest: we are reminded constantly how beneficial making changes to our diet and lifestyle can be. Medical study after medical study has shown the protective effects of regular exercise, a healthy balanced diet and cutting out smoking. These steps can help to improve our overall sense of wellbeing, in addition to protecting us from conditions such as heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Our health matters, but support is necessary if we are going to make any long-term changes. As well intentioned as New Year’s resolutions may be, many of us fail to make it to the end of January with our healthy changes. As part of our continuing work in disease prevention, Barts Health NHS Trust, in conjunction with Imperial College London, is running a lifestyle support study. This study is working with those who may be at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and is running over two years. If you have one or more of the following you may be suitable to take part: high blood pressure excess weight a family history of diabetes previous gestational diabetes previous heart attack raised blood sugar. If you are interested and would like to find out more, email diabetesresearch@barts health.nhs.uk or phone Isabelle Garvey on 7882 3916 for a no-obligation chat. Be aware that diabetes can often be symptom-less and lead to serious health problems including heart disease, stroke, vision loss, kidney disease and nerve damage. When present, symptoms can include: passing urine more often than usual, especially at night increased thirst extreme tiredness unexplained weight loss blurred vision. If you are worried, contact your GP who can talk to you about your concerns and, if necessary, run some simple blood and urine tests. If diagnosed, you will be referred to the Barts Health diabetes service which treats children and adult patients from our hospital sites and at community clinics across east London. The most important thing you can do to prevent Type 2 diabetes, and stay healthy if you have been diagnosed as diabetic, is to maintain a healthy weight and take regular exercise. Cook healthily COME along to our new, free cooking and dietary classes, being hosted by Tower Hamlets Community Housing. The sessions will run every Monday from 12.30- 2.30pm at the Tarling East Community Centre, Martha Street in Shadwell and are open to residents of Tower Hamlets, Newham and Waltham Forest as well as non-EU passport holders who have been living in the UK for less than ten years. With high obesity levels coupled with a poor diet prevalent in the East End, participants will learn how to cook healthy, nutritional and tasty meals, aid weight management and improve their health by reducing sugar and salt levels – all on a budget!
