The award recognises his services to primary care, the work he has done over the last 20 years as a GP in Tower Hamlets and in helping to shape the future of the NHS. The Bromley by Bow Centre, which Dr Everington helped set up, is regarded nationally and internationally as an example of effective working between the private, public and voluntary and community sectors to improve the health of local people. Dr Everington also chairs NHS Tower Hamlets Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which brings together 36 practices and 280 GPs, and is trustee of the King’s Fund health think tank. The citation for his knighthood speaks of him as “a cuttingedge innovator” working among some of the poorest communities in the country. Dr Everington said: “What a lovely surprise. I feel tremendously lucky to work with a wonderful group of patients, partners and colleagues in the Bromley by Bow Centre, Tower Hamlets and nationally who are so inspirational and committed to delivering high-quality health care in the NHS.” The council’s public health team and the CCG work together closely to ensure health services are commissioned effectively and to improve the health and wellbeing of the local population. Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “I want to congratulate Dr Everington on this welldeserved honour. He continues to dedicat e h i m s e l f t o ensuring the provision of highquality health services and improve access for local residents.” The executive principal for a consortium of academy schools in Tower Hamlets was awarded a CBE in the Honours List for services to education. Paradigm Trust, said the news came as “a total surprise”. “This honour is really for the pupils, families, staff and colleagues with whom I have had the privilege to work over many rich and rewarding years,” she said. The artists responsible for the hugely popular sea of red poppies at the Tower of London last year were honoured. , who devised the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation of 888,246 poppies to mark the centenary of the start of World War I, received MBEs. The poppies – one for each British or Colonial military fatality during WWI – attracted thousands of visitors to the Tower.
