News News in brief Being cycle aware THE council’s waste management contractor has announced a raft of measures to improve cycling safety. Veolia will spend £1m on fitting audible and visual nearside warnings on all its 3,125 vehicles of 3.5t and above, and provide incab and on-bike cycle training. Since 2013, the firm has been fitting audible warnings to tell cyclists when a vehicle is turning left. The scheme is now being extended to all vehicles of 3.5t and above. A cyclist awareness training programme for its drivers will be completed by September 2015. The scheme has been developed with advice from Transport for London, the Fleet Operators Recognition Scheme and the Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety scheme. Young people enjoy half-term activities YOUNGSTERS enjoyed an active half term, thanks to the council’s sports development team. The lovely October weather saw more than 80 young people, aged 5-16, take part in BMX sessions hosted by the council and Tower Hamlets BMX Club. Taking place at Mile End Park BMX track, the sessions taught youngsters how to ride a BMX, learn new tricks and gain confidence to race on the track. Annas Abbadi, 7, thought the session was excellent – it was his first time BMXing and he now wants to come to the Saturday BMX club. It was the second time out for Fudumo Mohammed, 12, who finished up a proud gold medallist. Evanté Meade, 8, who heard about the session through a friend, attended all five days and came first in the time trials in the 8-10 age group category. Organisers also said the number of girls attending the event had more than doubled. Tower Hamlets BMX Club sessions take place every Saturday and Sunday – for more information, visit www.towerhamletsbmx. co.uk Sports development and We s t H a m U t d Community Sports Trust welcomed 15 candidates to a Level 2 football coaching course at Mile End Stadium during half-term. The council has organised a conference that seeks to help professionals understand how gender-based violence impacts on young people and to ensure that youngsters are active in ensuring that it is prevented in future generations. The Youth Voices event also aims to raise awareness of the issue among young people and show them how they can get help and support. Topics discussed will include the council’s violence against women and girls strategy and how schools can help victims. Sessions will also look at child sexual exploitation and female genital mutilation. Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “This conference is essential to ensure that all professionals from across the voluntary and statutory sectors understand best practice and Tower Hamlets’ multi-agency approach in addressing genderbased violence in the borough.” Cllr Ohid Ahmed, cabinet member for community safety, added: “It is not right that gender-based violence can be allowed to perpetuate into future generations. The council is working hard to highlight the importance of this message by hosting events like this one.” The conference will be held on Thursday, November 12 at the Osmani Centre, Underwood Road, Whitechapel.
