Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership (THEBP) ran the event as a part of its passport to employability programme. Autism spectrum disorders often result in difficulties communicating, making eye contact, interacting with unfamiliar people and dealing with new situations. Anthony Horne answers a question from Joss Finnan, right The project was especially put together for the students. The young people attended workshops to introduce the concept of job interviews and what to expect, before volunteers from technology firm Sapient, law firm Peters and Peters and the Bank of England took each one through two practice interviews, based on their CVs and achievements. Joss Finnan, a volunteer from Sapient, said: “I really didn’t know what to expect beforehand but I found the students really chatty once you got them on to a subject they liked.” Interviewee Anthony Horne, 17, said he was nervous at first but later felt confident. Pam Benham, learning and destinations officer at Phoenix, said she was surprised and delighted by how well the students responded. Other elements of the programme included work place visits and work experience. BY JESSICA ODUBAYO SCHOOL pupils and young people are being inspired to realise the importance that remembering World War I has for their communities. The campaign has been inspired by the artwork Blood Swept Land and Seas of Red at the Tower of London (pictured). The learning and development team at Historic Royal Palaces, which runs the Tower, has designed the Why Remember campaign, to remind students of the need to keep the events in mind, even as the war slips from living memory and into the history books. The campaign is supported with online resources and multimedia content which is aimed at helping teachers stimulate discussion among students and to capture their responses. Elizabeth McKay, chief learning and engagement officer at Historic Royal Palaces, said: “The national schools campaign represents an extraordinary opportunity for children to engage in a meaningful discussion nationwide, as well as an ambitious development for Historic Royal Palaces. “The collated responses from across the country will act as a legacy of the centenary commemorations. Partnering with national and local organisations and using the latest technology, the Why Remember programme enables school pupils from across the UK to participate in memorable discussion about how and why we remember the First World War.” For more details, visit www. whyremember.hrp.org.uk GREEK mythology was brought to life for year 6 pupils at Bangabandhu School in Bethnal Green.
