The returning Quentin and Serkan made no difference. With just nine minutes on the clock, Timmy O’Mara slotted home after a mistake by Ange in the middle of the park. Hamlets quickly picked themselves up and Luke, brought down in the box, got up to slot home the penalty. The home side kept pressing and just before half-time dangerman O’Mara was there to head home after Armstrong had hit the bar. Tower Hamlets held the balance of play for the first 20 minutes of the second-half with Vinnie Williams going close. As they pushed forward though they were punished when O’Mara was on hand again to claim his hat trick and knock the heart out of the visitors. Jets missed a penalty after that, but Armitt was on hand to finish off the game and eased Jets’ final goal home with the last kick of the game. Winning streak Tower Hamlets WFC 2 Headstone Manor 0 TOWER Hamlets WFC took their winning streak to eight games with a convincing victory against fellow title contenders Headstone Manor. Tower Hamlets started strongly in the first 30 minutes, with plenty of possession and some excellent football. The first goal was a superb move finished off by the goal-hungry Hannah Dalgleish. The Cows went into the second half reinvigorated by fresh legs and tactical tweaks, eager to increase the scoreline. Returning midfielder Jocelyn Mullaney showed her trademark deft touch, toying with defenders on the left wing before finding the net with an expert lob. East knocked off the top Double blow for Wapping Hockey Hockey East London men 1 Potters Bar 3 BEFORE meeting Potters Bar at Lee Valley, East London had their noses ahead in the league, but this game changed all that. The hosts started well and put Potters Bar under pressure. They were made to pay for early misses by Joe Green, Adam Lord, Felix Evans and Adam Willoughby when the Potters took the lead from a penalty corner. Green scored early in the second half, from a well worked deflection, but East were largely on the back foot. Man-of-thematch Chris Leek made several fine saves. Tunbridge Wells ladies 2nds 1 East London 1 East London travelled to leaders Tunbridge Wells and, true to form, conceded an early goal. East kept their heads up and, after a fine passing move, Tori Barker passed into the D and Leanne Garvie notched her first goal of the season. The scores were level at the break and that’s how it stayed, despite some serious offensive play from East London and good team work. Other results: East London mens 2nd 1 Wapping 5th 2; East London 3rd 1 Colchester 2nd 1; East London 4th 0, Old Southendian 3rd 3; East London 5th 4 Redbridge & Ilford 3rd 0; East London 6th 3 Chelmsford 5th 1; East London 7th 1 Havering 4th 0. East London ladies 2nd 1 (Patel), Basildon 3rd 2; East London 3rd 2 Maldon 2nd 1; East London 5th 1 Crostyx 3rd 1. East London 2nd 3, Norwich Dragons 2nd 5, East London Mixed 2nd 1 London Strollers 5. IT was double heartbreak for Wapping Hockey Club’s first teams with the ladies losing to a late Cambridge goal and the men stunned by a quick-fire three-goal blitz before losing 3-2 at home to Bedford. The ladies started well and rattled the Cambridge defence but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock. They strung together several passes down the centre of the pitch and a fantastic strike from the top of the D saw them go 1-0 ahead. In the second-half a fine move down the right ended was finished off well by Kate Silbermann. With seven minutes to go Wapping attempted to protect a hard-earned point, but Cambridge had other ideas. They attacked again and managed to capitalise on a frantic goalmouth scramble in the closing moments of the game with the ball looping over Karen Perkins to make it 2-1. Wapping men’s team were in confident mood given their recent run of positive results and after 15 minutes, a powerful short corner strike from Felix Styles put them ahead. In the last ten minutes of the first half though, Wapping took their foot off the pedal and were punished. Bedford were clinical on the counter, scoring twice at the end of the first half and then immediately after the interval. Wapping dominated the final 25 minutes of the game with a barrage of attacks and clawed back a goal with 15 minutes to go through Grant Aidoo-Nash. After that, they were frustrated by goal line clearances and good goalkeeping. 10 – 16 NOVEMBER 2014 N E W S F R O M T O WER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 35
