Parks across the borough were buzzing with excitement, with the ever popular A Great Day Out in Victoria Park which attracted thousands of visitors, A Day By the Sea in Mile End Park where the seaside was brought to the city, and A Sporting Carnival in Stepney Green Park topping off the busy free schedule of events. September will see a raft of launches including the roll-out of free school meals for all children in primary schools. We were one of the first councils in the country to provide free school meals to reception and year 1 children last year and are thrilled to be expanding the scheme to all pupils. The council’s contract services team, which looks after schools meals, received high praise by scooping a prestigious industry award and named catering business of the year in August. The team provides 24,000 children with lunches every day from their premises in Toby Lane, Mile End, where meals are freshly prepared. Providing children with hot, healthy, nutritious meals is a significant factor in their success, as healthy children make better learners. Students can take advantage of the Mayor’s Higher Education Award, which will be relaunching later this month. The ground-breaking scheme aims to help with the cost of university living. Last year 400 grants of £1,500 were handed to young people. The scheme was the first higher education grant programme of this scale in the country. Residents might spot our new mobile police van over the coming months as the community safety surgeries kick off on September 12. People will be able to voice concerns they have around crime and anti-social behaviour directly at the surgeries. Scientists including theoretical physicist, author and broadcaster Prof Jim Al-Khalili, Dr Hannah Fry, Prof Sophie Scott and Prof Graham Hitman lead sessions aiming to inspire and encourage the next generation of scientists and engineers. They discussed topics such as the science of laughter, quantum mechanics and life, and whether type 2 diabetes can be prevented. The summer school, held this year from August 28-30, supports St Paul’s Way Trust School’s approach to engage and interest students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. It also aims to encourage an understanding of what real research means and involves, increase the uptake for STEM A Levels and degrees, and get more students to pursue a career in STEM subjects. Prof Cox said: “The UK’s future economic success and growth depends on us building a worldclass knowledge-intensive economy underpinned by an exceptional STEM workforce.” He said science and engineering was for everybody with a drive to succeed. “You don’t have to be a genius and you don’t have to be a man – science and engineering is for everyone,” he said. St Paul’s Way is a specialist science school and head teacher Grahame Price said: “We are committed to inspiring young people to take a life-long interest in science, and encouraging the next generation of Britain’s scientists through innovative teaching methods and a practical and investigative approach to learning.” 6 NEWS FROM TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 8 – 14 SEPTEMBER 2014
