The Tower Hamlets Judo Club starlet was leading throughout the gold medal contest, but three seconds from the end he made a tactical error and a split second distraction cost him glory. Earlier Muniz, 16, competing in the championships for the fourth time following bronze medal successes in 2010 and 2011, had produced his best performance to date. He stormed through the elimination round winning all four matches by ippon (before regular time) and entertaining the crowd with outstanding allround judo techniques. His semi-final contest against a four-time British champion was the most spectacular match of the day. After regular time there were still no points on the boards even though both players attacked. When the contest moved in to extra time, ‘golden score’ had to decide the victory. Leonardo was determined to be in the final for the first time and produced some remarkable throws after which he was awarded a standing ovation. Club-mate Abdel-Aziz Zahmoul was competing in his first British championships and did well to win his first match. Unfortunately he lost to strong opponents in the other two matches, but as one of the youngest competitors he gained great deal of experience. A club spokesman said: “Leonardo is a great athlete and very talented player and deserved to have a gold medal on the day, but he is still very young and there is lots of work ahead of him. “Hopefully he will continue his development and will have more occasions in the future to celebrate at national and international level.” Leonardo is a student at the Ernest Bevin College in Wandsworth where he takes part in British Judo Association’s apprenticeship programme for athletes aged 15-19. The programme has developed an advanced apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence, designed so that athletes will aspire for excellence in their sport and will also gain skills, knowledge and qualifications to support additional career options.
