Dated: 6th January 2014 JAMIE BLAKE SERVICE HEAD, PUBLIC REALM The stars of tomorrow BY PETER FAULKNER BISHOP Challoner pupils William Andoh and Diane Mapamboli could be Britain’s future sprinting heroes, two potential candidates for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. They were two of the Tower Hamlets Youth Sports Foundation athletes who took part in the Metaswitch Games indoor championships. And their results really have earmarked them for big things. Andoh,12, has never run competitively before, but in his first serious race he broke the United Kingdom under-13 British record twice, clocking 7.78 seconds both times for the 60m. That knocked 0.07 seconds off the previous record, ironically set by another Bishop Challoner student – Lathursan Vinyagamoorthy in 2011. Andoh is a product of the THYSF gifted and talented identification scheme which Mike Whittaker with his rising young athletics stars identifies and nurtures the potential of young Tower Hamlets students. Diane Mapamboli,11, another year 7 pupil competing in her first ever race, ran a time of 8.5 seconds for the girls 60m which broke the Lee Valley Stadium record and ranks her 12th in the country. Coach Mike Whittaker said: “These kids showed potential but we’re thinking long-term rather than getting too carried away at this stage. “Both came through Malmsbury Primary School and their development is due to the superb work done by their primary teacher Lisa LeBlond.” A total of 14 athletes competed – all setting personal bests – including rising star 15-yearold Wahid Werrouki, a Langdon Park student who celebrated the end of his first year in athletics with an 800m win. This climaxed a year in which he became London and Middlesex Champion. Sport in brief Misery for Lions FIFTH-placed London Lions basketball team managed to end their December nightmare which had threatened to derail their championship challenge. They closed the gap on the top four with a crucial 96-82 defeat of ESH Group Eagles Newcastle in their final festive fixture on December 29 at The Copper Box Arena. It was a welcome return to victory for the Lions, who have won their last five home games, but lost their previous three on the road. It was the Eagles first defeat in five matches. The Lions led for most of the game, withstanding a second quarter surge from the Eagles. Rod Brown, in his 200th BBL Championship game, led all scorers with 21 points and 11 assists, while Adrien Sturt also had a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds. In their three previous matches the Lions had lost 93-64 To Worcester Wolves, 81-70 to leaders One Health Sharks Sheffield and 91-78 to Leicester Riders. Meet Sir Ben VISITORS to the London Boat Show at the ExCel Centre all this week can relive the excitement and spirit of this year’s America’s Cup by meeting four-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie and his catamaran at the 2014 London Boat Show. The multi-hull that competed in the 2012-13 America’s Cup World will be on display for the whole show and visitors can also meet Sir Ben on Wednesday, January 8. Boost for fund THE recent charity martial arts seminar in aid of the Philippines disaster, held at Tarling East Community Centre, raised an amazing £3,000 for the disaster fund. The event was organised by Community Martial Arts Trust – a Tower Hamlets community voluntary sector organisation – and Filpino Martial Arts Academy, which specialises in martial arts from the Philippines. A silver lining A SWIMMING project run by Tower Hamlets Council has received a national accolade. Sport4Women, which has been running a women and girls swimming programme for several years, won a silver community project of the year award from the Amateur Swimming Association. Voted for by residents, the evening gave recognition to the hard work of those making projects such as Sport4Women successful. Sport4Women provides women and girls over-16 swimming sessions throughout the borough and is funded by Sport England. The club had chalked up nine wins when the fire alarm went off and everyone had to be evacuated. But by the time the fire brigade got there the show had to be called off. Three boxers - Chris Ali,Yakita Aska from Antigua and NABC Champ Sunny Edwards - all failed to get any action. The nine winners were: Henry Turner, John Conner Lee, Javade Skeete, Levi Dieton, Benny Eastwood, Gary Haffendeen, Jessie Dean Harris, Joseph Doran and Tommy Doran while Jessie Beck and George Ellis lost on points, but turned in good performances. History-making link-up HISTORY was made when the Bangladesh Football Association and West Ham FC staged a joint five-aside youth soccer tournament to unearth new talent. Fourteen teams from Tower Hamlets showcased their talents and Sporting Bengal won the under-10 and under-12 section beating Soul FC and Vallance while Soul won the under-14 final against their youth team. The West Ham Academy coaches were impressed with the skills on show and want to develop the event long-term. 6 – 12 JANUARY 2014 N E W S F R O M TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 31
