A new lease of life The Poplar Baths project aims to provide a leisure centre with a 25-metre pool, sports hall, gym with studios and café. Pupils from Cayley Primary School and St Paul's Way Trust School have been busy devising artwork that won them prizes of an iPad and gift certificates in a competition organised by developers Guildmore. Haydn Evans, head teacher at Sir John Cass Foundation & Redcoat Church of England Secondary School, Stepney received a CBE, for services to education. The school is rated as outstanding by education watchdogs Ofsted, which in its inspection report said: “The head teacher, together with his senior leadership team and governing body, have very successfully created an inclusive community where students of diverse cultures and backgrounds are equally valued and reach high levels of achievement.” Nikki Bradley, manager of family interventions service at the council, has been awarded an MBE for services to children and families. Qualifying as a social worker in 1985, she has since worked in various London boroughs in child protection, mental health services, adoption services and as a children’s guardian. She joined Tower Hamlets in 2007 with responsibility for parenting services, subsequently establishing the borough’s Family Intervention Project (FIP), which won the Guardian Public Service Award in 2009. As a result of this success, Nikki became an adviser to central government on intensive family work and contributed to the development of the current Troubled Families initiative. Nikki said: “I was both shocked and delighted when I learned about my MBE. It is an honour to be recognised for doing the work that I love. “This will be my 30th year in social work and it is a privilege to be able to represent the profession in such a positive way. “My thanks to the people who nominated me and to Tower Hamlets for supporting that nomination. “I have to recognise and thank my current team and their phenomenal efforts every day to reach out to the most vulnerable families in our borough and beyond.” Jonathan Harvey and David Panton, who founded Acme Studios in 1972, have been appointed OBEs for services to the arts. Their Bow-based charity provides affordable studio space as well as residencies and awards for non-commercial fine artists. The investment will also see 100 housing units developed alongside a new youth centre in Ben Jonson Road. Cabinet member for housing, Cllr Rabina Khan, said: “The development will bring a top class leisure centre, youth centre and much-needed homes to our community.” The project is aimed to be completed by the end of 2015.
