She never ceases to help her community and local people. Mr Miah received praise for bringing the community together in his work with the Bromley by Bow Centre for the last 20 years and in his role as secretary for the Bangladeshi Umor for Union Trust. Pensioner Dean Pursell from Bow was nominated by his proud wife, Cathy: “For the past 15 years, my husband has done voluntary work. He has raised thousands for The borough’s unsung heroes and heroines were recognised for their services to the community, sporting, artistic and cultural achievements, and business successes at the annual Tower Hamlets Civic Awards ceremony, as Susan Mulligan reports. Photos by Rehan Jamil. TEN residents were honoured with Civic Awards at this year’s ceremony held on March 26 at the Town Hall. Attended by the Deputy Lieutenant Commander John Ludgate, councillors and guests, the awards were presented by the council speaker, Cllr Abdul Chunu Mukit. Comm Ludgate said: “Every year I am impressed by the positive impact that Civic Award winners, and nominees, make in Tower Hamlets’ communities. “I am proud to be part of a tradition that recognises and thanks the unsung heroes and heroines, who work tirelessly for others.” Tania Nalywajko, Avril Coughlan, Mohammed A Mosabbir, Faruk Miah, Dean Pursell and the Rev James Olanipekun received awards for providing outstanding services to the community. Muhibur (Shamim) Rahman, Mohammed Iqbal Hussain and Mohammed Wadud Miah were recognised for bringing credit to the borough through sporting, artistic or cultural achievements. Mohammed Gulam Kibria received an award for the benefits he has brought to Tower Hamlets through his success in business and in community involvement. Winners of awards for the provision of outstanding services to the community Tania Nalywajko was nominated by her neighbour Penny Wilson for her community work. Penny said: “Tania has lived in Mile End all her life.
