And for the first time in the Games’ history Locksley Leopards became the first team to win the overall event twice. Leopards, who draw participants from Sir William Burrough, Stepney Greencoat and Our Lady’s primary schools, had strong showings across a number of events although their only individual success was in the fencing competition. But they beat off strong competition from the Mile End West Menaces (runners-up) and Spitalfields Storm (3rd) to see Helen Tang and her Leopards team lift the coveted trophy for the second time. The Summer Neighbourhood Games is one of two annual events for 7- to 11-year-olds who participate in the Tower Hamlets Youth Sport Foundation’s Stepping Stones programme, and it regularly attracts hundreds of participants. Youngsters from across Tower Hamlets, aged 16-21, are nominated and invited to undergo a programme of sports leadership training and mentoring, and are then supported to actively use their new skills to deliver multi-sport sessions in community ball courts on neighbourhood estates. The young people who participate in these sessions form mini-clubs and the 33 clubs come together during the summer holidays to compete in sports such as football, rugby, cricket, badminton, fencing, athletics, tennis and BMXing. The summer Neighbourhood Games is strongly supported by London’s insurance community with the Lloyds Community Programme providing both financial and volunteer support for the event. More than 60 City workers volunteered to help out at the latest event. The highly contested football and rugby competitions were both won by the Bethnal Green East Bulldogs led by Morpeth School sixth formers Dylan Farrugia and Harry Norton-Steele.
