First he reached the semifinals of a Grade 3 Mini-Red (8 and under) tournament on August 16 in Radlett, Hertfordshire. In a play-off for third place he beat an Orange 4 player who has played more than 100 matches and has far more experience. Six days later, on August 24, Zahid, from Farthing Field, Wapping, won his first Orange level tournament (9 and under) at Aldersbrook, Ilford. And he excelled because he beat players not only older than himself but also graded higher (Orange 1, 2 and 3). Zahid will become an Orange 4 player this month. He has been praised by his coach, Jamie Fainthead, at Tower Hamlets Tennis who rates him an exciting prospect. Lovell is the Lions’ latest recruit Basketball LONDON Lions head coach Vince Macaulay has added forward Lovell Cook to the team ahead of the new season. The 6’7” American has been a standout player with the University of New Orleans and was leading scorer his last two seasons in college. Proud Zahid, front, with his certificate The 23-year-old forward brings a lot of versatility to the Lions team averaging 14 points and four rebounds a game, and was the captain of his side as they adapted to Division 1 basketball in his final year there. “Lovell is tailor-made for the league, he can play in the post, play outside, shoot the jumper and guard every position on the floor,” said Macauley. “I have seen him play this summer and love his game and his energy. He reminds me of long time BBL favourite Rico Alderson on the floor.” Lions fans can see the team in action at the first home game of the season on Friday, October 3 when they take on British Basketball League newcomers, Bristol Flyers at the Copper Box Arena. Lions’ proposed friendly against PGE Turow which was scheduled for September 6, has been called off because some of the Polish team will not get their visas in time. The team has four Serbian players and a Serbian coach and a spokesman said they would not be prepared to travel and play without key players and without the coach.
