The device was purchased thanks to a £15,000 grant by charity the Friends of the Royal London. The film is projected from a wall onto a mirrored pair of glasses worn by the patient inside the scanner. Sound is played through a set of headphones. It has been shown that patients who become nervous or claustrophobic while undergoing a scan, find the distraction of watching a film soothes their nerves, and avoids the need for medication to relax them. It is essential for people to lie still during their scan inside the tunnel-shaped scanner in order to produce a clear image and the sensation of claustrophobia can make this very difficult. Specialist registrar in radiology Charlotte Roberts explained: “Using general anaesthetic and sedation can carry a risk for patients so it is fantastic that we can now offer watching films as a safer alternative to help people relax, as well as making the experience more welcoming for children.” Chairman of Friends of the Royal London Hospital Dr Anthea McEwan said: “It is fantastic that our fundraising efforts have enabled us to provide the hospital with such an important piece of new technology. We are proud to support the radiology team in improving the experience for their patients.” The charity is looking to recruit more volunteers, affectionately known as ‘trolley dollies’, to give a few hours of their week to take a trolley containing everyday essentials around the wards and provide a friendly chat to patients, brightening their day. Shafi Ahmed, 45, is also the only current member of the council from an ethic minority. Voted for by his peers, Mr Ahmed joins 23 elected members on the council which provides comment on government policy and supports the education, training and governance of all surgeons across England and Wales. Mr Ahmed, colorectal cancer lead at Barts Health NHS Trust, said: “At a time of many changes in surgical practice, it is a powerful opportunity to speak on behalf of Barts Health and represent views and experiences of colleagues and local people at a national level and continue to drive forward improvements in care.” Mr Ahmed has strong links to the area, having attended a local comprehensive school and spent his entire surgical career in north east London. His father, after moving to London from Bangladesh, also played an active role as a Tower Hamlets community leader and owned a travel agents and clothing businesses opposite the Royal London – where Mr Ahmed now works. He added: “I hope that my appointment will inspire local young people from ethnic minorities to be ambitious, work hard and to take opportunities offered to them. Doors to people from all backgrounds have been open for a while, I’ll be very happy if I help encourage people to go through them and achieve great things.” Local boy done good Surgeon Shafi Ahmed attended a local comprehensive school.
