Despite efforts to reunite the bikes with their rightful owners, a large number remained at Bethnal Green police station and the borough commander Dave Stringer agreed they could be given to charity. About 80 bicycles were donated to Streets of Growth in Poplar, where people on its Bike Recycle project can refurbish the them, and even keep one for themselves. Birkbeck, University of London and Fundamental Architectural Inclusion will host the talks at University Square Stratford. The first event will look at Olympic cities, their history, and the new spaces of east London. It will begin with a talk by Dr Leslie Topp, senior lecturer in history of architecture at Birkbeck, about the impact of Olympic and Paralympic Games on their host cities. Kay Hughes will give an informal guided tour of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and talk about her experiences as head of design at the Olympic Delivery Authority. Ability Bow, a specialist gym which supports people with a disability or health condition, is taking part in Nationwide’s Community Match scheme. Customers who visit a local branch can ask for a plastic token and vote by placing it in the Ability Bow display box. PC Mark Acott, from Tower Hamlets Safer Transport team, said: “It is disappointing that our enquiries were unable to reunite these bikes with their owners. “Many owners are unaware of their cycle frame number, which can be recorded on sites such as BikeRegister.” Registering a bike helps police and retailers identify the legitimate owner if it is stolen. The 20-year-old from Mile End, who took up juggling six years ago, competed against nine people in Dalton, North Yorkshire on April 14. “I juggled three diablos. PC Fletcher was fatally wounded during a protest outside the embassy in St James’s Square, central London in 1984.
