The occasion was the Tower Hamlets Sports Foundation’s 3v3 basketball competition staged at St Paul’s Way Trust School. It attracted an entry of more than 70 budding basketball players, all determined to win the court crown. The atmosphere was incredible as pupils cheered on their players while baskets were being scored. The group stages were tough and, as the games wore on, two schools were beginning to set apart themselves from the rest – Marion Richardson and Old Ford. The semi-finals proved a unique affair as Marion Richardson A team took on Marion Richardson B team, while in the other semi-final Old Ford A team faced their B team. And it ended with the Marion Richardson B team battling out the final against Old Ford A. The final proved as close as everyone predicted it would be and the game looked like ending all square at 2-2 as extra time loomed. But out of the blue Old Ford managed to work their way round for a lay-up with seconds on the clock. As the ball dipped into the basket off the backboard, all eyes turned to the officials and within seconds the whistle was blown. Abdal Ahmed, extra curriculum manager at Tower Hamlets Youth Sports Foundation, said: “Firstly, I would like to thank St Paul’s Way Trust School for allowing us to use this fantastic facility, the borough’s secondary schools have some great facilities and it is ideal when local primary schools get to use them. “I would also like to say well done to Marion Richardson and Old Ford for reaching the finals. “It was a super day with the standard of basketball very high. All the best to Old Ford who go onto represent Tower Hamlets in the School Games at Crystal Palace.” For details about Tower Hamlets Youth Sports Foundation call Some of the action on the day Abdal Ahmed on 7987 4811. 36 NEWS FROM TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 28 APRIL – 4 MAY 2014
