It was the league leaders’ 106th league goal this season and the match could have gone either way. Tower Hamlets were two goals up at the break and looking likely to add to their tally. Although Rovers pulled one back in the second half, Hamlets still looked like holding on to their slender lead as time started running out. Then in injury time Bertie Brayley sealed a late point and there were a frantic few minutes when either team could have won the game as they both pushed forward looking for the winner. Tayla leads gold medal chase while Mercury keeps soaring KARATE BY PETER FAULKNER TAYLA O’Brien and Miles Mercury are proving that they are two Bethnal Green youngsters with big sporting futures. Ten-year-old Tayla followed up her English karate title win with another golden display when she won the EKKA Eastern Counties crown. Miles, 12, reached four finals for under-14 and under-16 boys at the Redbridge Easter Grade 4 and Connaught competitions. And two wins and two defeats against older boys has seen Miles soar up the British rankings. The Eastern Counties karate event proved to be a great competition all round for Bethnal Green’s Uechi-ryu Karate Club with great performances from Mabel Wilson and Aniis Elmi as well as Tayla. Between them the talented trio picked up four medals – two of these for Tayla. Her latest success came at the Northgate Sports Centre, Ipswich, beating club-mate Mabel who took the silver. Both girls were competing in the 4ft 2ins- 4ft 8ins 3rd-1st kyu category. Then Aniis came third also in kumite to win bronze in his category – the boys 4ft 2ins-4ft 8ins, 6th-4th kyu. And to complete a great day for the club Tayla also took silver in the mixed kata for ages 10-13. Tayla, centre, with Aniis Elmi and Mabel Wilson Miles Mecury with his mum Funmi After winning the first three rounds by a 3-0 margin, Tayla lost by one point in the final. Coach Terry Daly said: “Four medals from three students at one tournament makes us very proud. They performed to the highest standard and are a credit to our club.” At the Redbridge Easter event Miles Mercury reached the final for 14-year-olds and the final for the 16-year-olds’ competition, losing to Alex Curaba and number one seed James Lee respectively. Then he reached the finals of both the 14-and-under and 16- and-under Connaught championship and this time pulled off a brilliant double beating Harrison Varda and Luke Pike. Both matches took place at the Connaught Club, Chingford and Miles saw his nation year age group rise from 1356th to 470th.. He puts it all down to early morning yoga. Miles, of Mansford Street, Bethnal Green, has been getting up at 6am with his mum Funmi for yoga training and he believes this has helped his stamina. His ranking in the national 14 years category has also improved dramatically, seeing him go from 395th to number 172 in the country. The two finals, which each lasted around two hours, had to be played the same day and with only a onehour break in between. But it earmarks Miles as a star of the future because at 12 he is holding his own against boys up to four years older. In the 14 years and under event Miles beat Marcus Leong 6-2, 6-0, Mikko Von Wielligh 6- 4, 6-4, and Jack Pearso 6-1, 6-4, before losing 6-3, 6-2 to Curaba. In the 16 years and under competition Miles beat James Beswik and Zayn Ahmed before a brilliant victory over number two seed Edward Willsher. He did not disgrace himself in the final losing 6-3, 7-6 to the number one seed James Lee. 34 NEWS FROM TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 28 APRIL – 4 MAY 2014
