Celebrating community events THCH holds events including celebrating the East End’s links with hop picking and supporting community groups wishing to hold events such as the Big Lunch or Open Gardens days. see below All change The Geffrye Museum shows how homes reflect changes in society, taste and behaviour over the past 400 years. www.geffrye-museum.org.uk Property TOWER Hamlets Community Housing (THCH) held a Bengali New Year party for more than 80 residents and guests at the Tarling East Community Centre in Shadwell. Author Shahida Rahman spoke about her novel, Lascar, and the history of Bengalis in the UK. Guests heard how, as Lascars, thousands of men from East Bengal (what is now Bangladesh) and West Bengal in India served in the Royal and Merchant Navy between the 16th and early 20th centuries, with many settling in Britain over the last 300 years. After the talk and a biryani lunch, traditional Bengali dancers and a three-piece folk group entertained guests who were also able to browse a number of stalls where information was available on topics such as recycling, cancer awareness and living a healthy lifestyle. Welcoming guests to the party on April 16, THCH chief executive Mike Tyrrell said: “At THCH we pride ourselves on celebrating community events, such as today’s party marking the Bengali New Year, St George’s Day, Eid and Christmas parties later in the year, as well as numerous other events.” Meet the neighbours (Pictured right) Guests enjoy a biryani lunch NEW residents moving into the East Village development near the former Olympic Park were treated to a welcome party. Organised by Triathlon Homes and Get Living London, the ‘block party’ gave people the chance to meet their new neighbours as well as find out about initiatives and facilities in the area. More than 360 new homes have recently been occupied in the Village and the event was attended by more than 500 people. Some ‘intermediate market’ homes are still available to rent on the site from £310 per week – a 20 per cent reduction on average market rate rents. Designer living at the Geffrye BY LARAINE CLAY A NEW exhibition on contemporary design in the home opens at the Geffrye Museum this week. Showcasing cutting edge design by both well-established industry figures and emerging talent, it coincides with the museum’s centenary year and celebrates one of its original purposes – to inspire the local furniture-making industry. Part of the exhibition – useful + beautiful: contemporary design for the home – will be staged in the museum’s period gardens. A programme of events has been organised during the fourmonth show, including talks by the curator and featured designers, a debate on the future of design, workshops and activities for children. The first of these is a panel discussion on the topic An Ideal Home? on Thursday, May 8 from 7-8.30pm. Among those debating good design for the home, now and in the future, will be designer Wayne Hemingway, Carmel Allen, creative director at Heal’s, and Gareth Williams, formerly senior lecturer at Royal College of Art. Tickets cost £18, £14.50 concessions. To book, call 7739 9893. Later in the year, graduate designers from leading art and design courses will be exhibiting their work – jewellery, textiles, ceramics from June 25- 28 and furniture and product design, illustration and motion arts from July 2-5. Useful + beautiful runs from Tuesday, April 29 until August 25 at the museum in 136 Kingsland Road, E2. Admission is £5 or £3 concessions.
