Inside this week’s issue artist christine kathleen PIECES of art were popping up around Mile End as residents became artists for the day. They were invited to take part in Mile End Art Outside, a land art project organised during the Easter holidays with Southern Grove Centre and East End Homes, to encourage the community to get creative. They got to create pieces of temporary art around the area for other residents to enjoy, many of whom complimented the features as they passed by. Artists of all ages took part and were given a bag of equipment and materials before they set off on the art trail. They were also encouraged to use natural materials, such as stones, twigs, leaves and daisies, to create their art pieces. The trail started at Eric Street Cow Garden and continued along Hamlets Way, Southern Grove and Maplin Street – even the pathway outside Derwent House was given a bright and colourful makeover. The day was organised by Penny Wilson and led by artist and creative educator Christine Kathleen. Christine said: “The day couldn’t have gone any better. Mamun Chowdhury and Rob Huson, co-founders and directors of London Tradition in Bow, started production in a small factory on the site of what is now Olympic Park land. The company’s innovation led to the development of one of their signature garments – the Heritage Duffle Coat. And last week, the company announced that it has won the Queen’s Award – the highest accolade that a UK business can receive – in recognition of its outstanding success in the last six years. Announced on the Queen’s birthday, April 23, the award acknowledges companies that have made an outstanding contribution to the British economy. Growing at a rate of 33 per RESIDENTS celebrated St George’s Day with a traditional tea dance on April 23 at the Brady Arts Centre in Whitechapel. The popular free annual event hosted by the council attracted many new faces and drew in regulars who cite it as a highlight in their social calendar. Mr Chowdhury, who came to the UK from Bangladesh and 105 has lived in Poplar for more than 21 years, told East End Life he was extremely pleased to receive the award. “We design and manufacture high-quality, modern heritage coats for young urban consumers from Tuscany to Tokyo. Ninety per cent of our clients are outside of the UK. They want British culture with an international style – the ‘made in Britain’ guarantee is at the heart of our continued success,” he said.
