New panel to combat underage tobacco sales BY SARAH MCLAUGHLIN RETAILERS who are caught selling tobacco products to underage children and young people are to be given additional guidance through a new tobacco panel set up by the council. The panel is aimed at combating the problem of underage tobacco sales in the borough. It is illegal to sell cigarettes and tobacco related products to children and young people under the age of 18. It will be convened to hear the defence of retailers who have committed an underage sales offence involving tobacco for the first time. During the panel meeting, the business will have the chance to discuss the incident and how to avoid future occurrences. It is a chance for businesses to put their side of the story and discuss ways of preventing further offences before a decision is made on how to proceed with the case. RASG Retail of Alcohol Standards Group UNDER 25? Please be prepared to show proof of age when buying age restricted products Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “Tackling the sale of tobacco to children in Tower Hamlets is high on our agenda and we take this offence very seriously. We feel that opening the lines of communication and providing educational support is helpful in certain circumstances.” Cllr Ohid Ahmed, cabinet member for community safety, said: “We hope that supporting local businesses in this way will help us all work towards reducing the incidents of underage sales in the long term.” Last year the council launched the underage sales and responsible If If f you look lo ookund under der 25 ho hope ope ope you yo oudon’’ou don’t don t t tmind mind d if we we e ask you y to p prove it it... t...
